Hey folks,
Thought I had this computer's problems licked when I discovered after doing a Google search that it has a problem with the hosts file (may also have other problem, I don't know yet). Hosts file in the etc folder is locked (this is XP btw). I have attached this Hijackthis log. I should mention as well that HJT comes up with two errors, one basically stating the obvious, that the Hosts file is locked, and one asking me to send the maker of HJT an email.

If possible, can I get someone to explain to me the reasoning for the solution you give me as I would like to learn how to do this myself.

There may be other problems as well. So please follow these instructions:
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

In the meantime, do this:
Reset Host File
Open Notepad.
Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: (Do not include the word Code:)

pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0
Go to File >> Save As

Save File name as FixHosts.bat

Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
Now double click on the desktop FixHosts.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

Attach the requested logs when you can.
