Hijackthis logfile - request for help as to what to do

Discussion in 'Malware Help (A Specialist Will Reply)' started by peter.wyard@btinternet.co, Feb 5, 2007.

  1. Dear Major Geeks
I am not sure if I have posted this logfile to the right place.

I am not a computer expert.

My problem is that when I do a Google search all the links returned get redirected to other sites until I have clicked on them 3 or 4 times.

I have done full scans with Norton Antivirus 2005 and Lavasoft Adaware and removed what they found, but the problem still remains.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis (This log should be the last one done!)
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

  3. I'm sorry that I did not carry out all the steps on your README page the first time: I thought you said that those who are not computer experts should not attempt to do all those things, but I must have misread you.

I hope I have now done what you asked. The various scans have found a few viruses etc. but my original problem of Google search results being redirected still happens.

    Peter

  4. Dear Major Geeks
This is my second reply. The first one should have had th logs from CounterSpy. BitDefender and Panda ActiveScan.

This one should have GetRunKeys ShowNew and HijackThis.

I think I failed to upload the file attachments to my first message today.
The files are the logs for CounterSpy, BitDefender and Panda ActiveScan.

Please go to Add/Remove in the control panel and uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player

Did you run Ad-Aware and CCleaner? If not do so now.

    Then:
Please download FixWareout by LonnyRJones from one of the two below links and save it to your desktop.

    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
    • Run Fixwareout.
    • Click Next,
    • then Install,
    • make sure Run fixit is checked
    • and click Finish.
    • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
    • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
When you run fixwareout, just follow the prompts, you will need to restart when prompted.

After rebooting (restart) back into normal boot mode, make sure you have all web browsers closed.
    • Go into Control Panel -->Network Connections.
    • Right click on your connection
    • and click Properties.
    • On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
    • Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
    • Click the ok button. The page will close.
    • Press ok on the page in front of you.
    • Restart the computer.
    • Reconnect to the Internet using Internet Explorer.
    • Now come back here and attach the log from fixwareout. It is located at c:\fixwareout\report.txt
    Also attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    HJT

  7. Dear Major Geek
    Thanks for your last reply.
I think the problem may be solved - I have tried two Google searches and the links found no longer seem to be redirected.

I have carried out the actions you suggested.
    Please find attached:
    log from fixwareout
new logs from ShowNew and HJT

    Regards

  9. Dear Major Geek
I just did all this, as reported in my last message.
You seem to have sent the same message twice.
    Was this a mistake?

Your HJT log shows that the 017 items (Wareout infection) is still there, unless you attached an old HJT log. Was there a problem running the fix? Did you have any messages after the run?

  11. Still have 017 entries, I think.
I attach the latest HJT report.
Forum messaging system will not allow me to attach latest Fixwareout report - it says that I have already attached it to the thread, but I don't think I have.

FixWareOut only removes hidden processes and a few other misc things. It will not remove the O17 lines. You must fix them manually.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now attach new logs for:

    * GetRunKey
    * ShowNew
    * HJT

  15. I have done as you suggested and deleted the 10 entries using HiJackThis.

    Logs attached.

    Your logs are looking good.

    Please delete the following folders:
    C:\04022007
    C:\ebbdcd63eb44f6bb9182676f

Then go to Add/Remove and uninstall these:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Panda ActiveScan

    Now reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!

  17. I have done all this.
The Google redirect problem appears to have been resolved.
I hope things will now be better for some time.

Thanks very much for your help.

    Peter Wyard.
