Hi There, please be gentle with me, this is my first post on a forum. I have been working on a friend's laptop, which I will NEVER do again, the pressure is too much:cry. She claims her Compaq Presario V6000 would take approx 10 mins to start up. She only has about 10GB of hard drive space left. I have installed new virus and malware protection as she never remembered to run a scan and was not set up to do auto. Playing with msconfig I seemed to get the start up time down to about 1.45mins from password entry. Then I accidentally enabled all on msconfig at start up, so of course it has slowed right down again. Please if someone has the time can you please check out my HijackThis and msconfig logs and tell me what you think? The original problem she was having was "Windows failed to start message". I haven't seen this after restarting about 10 times. I have also done a Defrag, CCleaner, updated NVIDIA drivers as the Gaming Graphics score was only 2.6. I have attached 2 logs as files. Not sure if this is appropriate or if I should just copy & paste:-o
Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi

Msconfig contrary to popular belief is not the best route to manage startups for a few reasons and one is uninstall an app later on you have managed and its startup will become stuck in the msconfig list, so better to use in Vista, StartupCPL and (in msconfig enable them all again) then unctick the ones you dont want in StartupCPLs lists.

You can also disable the following as well as the ones you already have done:
    NvCplDaemon (Nvidia control panel)
    NvMediaCenter (again Nvidia)
WMPNSCFG (Windows Media Player, open the app when needed)
swg (personally I'd remove the Google Toolbar fully)
msnmsgr (can start Messenger if and when needed)
ehTray.exe (Windows media centre, can run when you need it)

and Hijackthis is a weird tool thats doesnt tell much unles its specific malware types, and they mainly need more cleaning tools than HJT, but you only have one BHO (Browser Helper Object) that has no name that can be removed.

If you suspect malware as the cause then to rule it out properly you would need to follow the below as written.

10GB of HDD space is not alot and Windows will start to have issues the more of that left space is now used, I would start looking at applications that are not used much or needed and uninstall them, to putting important files, music and images that are not used alot onto CD/DVD or an external HDD for safe keeping.

If hibernation is not used on the PC then you can disable it HERE and tidy up the System Restore points and two ways of doing this with CCleaner and delete all bar the last two new ones (that will give you an extra restore point to recover from) or using Windows Cleanup delete all bar the last one, info HERE and these opitions should give you back a few GB.

and no Attached Files as you did is perfect, thank you.

Thanks David. Have tried the StartupCPL, the only problem is when I uncheck a box to remove from startup it duplicates the line underneath with a check in the box. If I try to uncheck both boxes, it tells me to rename one of the files. I told her she has way too much stuff on her computer, but you know us women, we just don't listen til' something goes wrong. :-D Ha ha. Any ideas?

    Hi

2nd time I have forgot this bit in running StartupCPL in Vista or win7, is to right click the application and choose Run as Administrator and then your fine, you can delete the duplicates.

also do clear out the system restore points if not already and run as I think mentioned in the other thread below, some of the cleanup steps including defrag etc.

Will close this earlier thread and best to continue in this new one you have here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=236586 always best to stick to one thread per topic as all information is in one thread and saves duplication.
