I have a question about using hijackthis. I'm cleaning a friend's computer, and have followed the tutorial with much success. However, when I run the scan I have several "023" entries related to her antivirus and firewall (avast and sygate). The tutorial stops at line 022, and I'm wondering what these entries are. She is running Windows XP pro.

Follow the below and I will check your log for you.

    • Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT
    • Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file.
    • Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.
    • Run HijackThis and save your log file.
    • Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Hi bjgarrick
Thanks for the help...I checked the merijin.org site which lists 023 items as non-windows services. I'm still a little uncertain if they are cool or not. Again, this girl is running XPpro and has sygate personal firewall and avast antivirus installed. I'll check back again later.

The first thing I noticed is that your Operating System is WAY out dated. After I confirm your system is clean I recommend your going to Windows Updates and getting updated! You need to install Service Pack 2 for security purposes and other reasons. Without this you will continue to have problems!

Your log is clean, the O23 enties your talking about are clean. They are part of Sygate Personal Firewall & avast! Antivirus. This is the services that starts the software. They are safe, leave them as is.

Are you having any further problems?

big thanks for the help...I figured the entries were ok, but I wanted to check before I told her her system was fine. I'll get on her to update windows ;) She's not having any trouble at the moment.
    cheers
