I'm trying to clean up a friends computer...in the meantime, i've downloaded (from this website) the latest version of Spybot S&D and when I go to install it I keep getting a general protection fault in GDI.EXE!! I kind of know what that is about, but I can't seem to make it go away (so...maybe I don't know what it is about!!)!! So after researching a bit, and since it is Win 98 (with no updates, believe it or not) I upgraded the Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime files to version 6.0!! Restarted the computer...and then was able to install Spybot!!

    Great, Right.................Wrong!!!!

When I run the program...it only scans for 29 things, which was acquired when I checked for updates!! Apparently when it installed, it didn't install the 20,000 something definitions that come with the latest install version of the downloaded program!!

No big deal...I figured i would just uninstall it, download again and reinstall, and see if that resolved the problem.......except now it won't let me uninstall!!! No matter whether I do it by Add/Remove programs in the control panel, or if I do the uninstall option that comes up under Spybot in the program list in the start menu!!

I get this error now....UNINS000 caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE at 002: 00000041. Followed by a bunch of code etc.!!!!

So now i'm stuck with an unoperable Spybot on my computer that I can't uninstall!!!!

    Any ideas pretty please

Why does your title say HJT causing general protection faults in GDI.EXE when your problem seems to be with Spybot?

What version of Spybot did you have?

Did you try uninstalling in safe mode?

How about a reinstall (in safe mode) over the top of what you already have?

I sincerely apologize for that!!!!! Must have been having a temporary brain fart when I typed that title!!

I will try the safe mode stuff and see what that brings!!
