Sorry Matt, but no you did not run the procedures. In fact it does not look like you did any of them. I do not see Spybot or MS Antispyware installed. It does not look like you ran Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and you definitely did not do any of step 6.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear... I did run every procedure verbatim and was still having problems. Every program installed properly, I got all latetest updates, enable all protections (spybot, spyware blaster, CCleaner etc) I then deleted Windows XP completely from my hard drive and reinstalled from CD (new install) therefore losing all programs etc. I did this as a desperation move hoping I would delete all possible viruses/spyware files. I then started using my computer as normal hoping the problem was solved and then it locked up on me just as it did before. Not sure if this is even a spyware/virus problem.

So this is a new copy of windows with nothing really installed yet. I can run through these again if it is needed but I guess I was thinking if it didn't solve the problem the first time why now?
    Thanks.

Well then you should throw out this CD and get an original official copy because it installed a load of infections.

So either do the above or run the cleaning procedures from beginning to end and attach the requested logs per the READ ME.

You should also do the below.

    Please follow the below steps...
    1. Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
    2. Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
      • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
      • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
    3. Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
    4. RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
    5. The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before attaching it.
    6. Please attach the the log here in this thread to your next post.
