So get this - a lady at work told me her comp was having problems and she asked if I could come have a look at it and fix it. So I went over there today and this is what I found:

    37 worms
    94 adware programs
    16 trojans
    72 other viruses/spyware programs

HOLY FRIGGIN' CRAP. Adware found 2,948 different infected files. I mean, how has she functioned on this computer?!? So I'm going back tomorrow. I'm thinking that she should just reformat the hard drive. I mean honestly, it is so out of control. The comp has almost everything I've ever seen including about:blank, CWS, the poker/casino adwares, and her IE had 6 different toolbars.

It was actually quite amusing - I mean, how does a person do that?!?

I love hearing stories like this one. So very funny.

I can't remember what the Ad-Aware record is but 2948 has to be up there.

lol - I've run into that as well. Some people are clueless when it comes to protecting their PC's. Try as you might, with some you cannot get the point across and you are in for repeat visits to their self-induced corner of cyber-hell. I actually changed my policy of not charging friends for this service . . . the first cleaning is free - but if I have to come back for the same thing again . . . its time for some compensation lol

I removed about 1,500 pieces of spyware from my sis' laptop on the weekend and 3 worms. Why can't people put friggin firewalls on, and be careful on what they view???!!!!

Well mostly because some folks just cain't learn from others mistakes, others just don't care. The one thign that always gets me are those folks that feel the need to install & try out every one of those "free Internet" offers they get in the mail.

Not too long ago, I had a friend ask me to look at her computer because it was slow, etc., etc., and when I got it and started digging....For starters...She has DSL and had NO firewall and Anti-Virus on it, so you can imagine the mess!!!! Ofcourse I immediately installed AVG, and Zone Alarm, and when I ran the AVG....It pulled up over 2000 infected files, and then S&D and Adaware found a combined 1000 spyware problems!!!!

So...I cleaned it all up, I informed her of what the problem was, how it came about, and how to further avoid it...I even made her a step by step, home made manaul, in dumbed down plain english, on how to stay on top of it and how to use the scanner programs that I installed!!

Cool right.....WRONG....A week later, I ran into her and she told me that AVG had found 20 Trojan Horses and she couldn't get AVG to automatically fix the problems!!!! One week later, she was at the beginning of being right back where she started!!!!!

Some people just simply do not comprehend what is going on!!!!

I always expect a friend to compensate me for working on their computer (if they can afford it), then if they continue to need support afterwards, then I help free of charge, but after about the 100th time of going back, you finally have to beat it in with a ball bat, I guess!!!???

Maybe she was just trying to be helpful and thought if she collected all the spyware and viruses on the net then the rest of us wouldn't get them *grins*

Thats the main problem: people don't care.

To me, its like jumping into a car the first time and expecting to be able to drive it. And after the 1st week, the gearbox is shattered because you don't know how to use the clutch, or the engine severly overheating because you had the choke out for every journey. Quel surprise.

My sister in law calls, Road Runner is going to shut them off because they are spamming. Of course, they barely know what that word means. Now, not sure what they had, it cleaned fairly easily, but I see Incredimail running. Not a huge deal, its a legit program.

    Question:
    "When did you install Incredimail?"

    Response:
"I didnt install it, it was just there and I liked it, so I use it. Can you keep it on the computer?"

I see about 5 or 6 icons to install the program on the desktop, so obviously this was used to send all the spam, but the response killed me! Sigh :)

Whoa! I didn't think the record was that high! 68 thousand is amazingly high!

There should be a competition to see who can get their computer to have the most infected files... if there isn't such a competition alreay. ;)

I recently worked on a computer for this guy and he told me that he put a lot of money into it. The monitor was friggin huge. It was the biggest monitor that I have ever seen on a someone's private home computer. I started working on it and I couldn't understand why anyone would put XP on such a slow computer. It turned out to be a 2.2ghz processor but it ran like a 700mhz system. There were 4 IE toolbars and 26 spyware processes running. The worst part was that he stood over my shoulder and watched me the whole time, so I couldn't listen to music on my palm pilot or anything. If anyone is going to put that much money into their system, at least take care of it.

I am totally the awesome...her computer is all fixed. I ran 4 different programs and none of them found even 1 infected file. Plus it runs like 1000 times faster than before. Wahoo! I talked to her today though and she told me that 2 of her neighbors want to hire me (like pay me money) to come fix theirs. Hey, as long as their paying...well, that's friggin awesome. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

You should start your own side-business that deals with infected computers. Get the word of mouth going!

Yeah, I work with Circuit City's *world-class* pc repairmen, the IQ Crew. I've seen several computers with well over 10,000 infected files...I offer antivirus/antispyware to every customer who buys a computer, and it's astounding the number of people who decline, then return a month later because their computer's infected. Oh well, keeps me employed. Also, since its summer and no school for me, I did post an ad in the local paper, and I've made a nice chunk of change fixing people's computers, so I'd say go for it newgroove :) Good luck!
