Man have I been asleep or what, suddenly my old age is staring me in the face on MG. Personally I am not to sure that this is a great idea. You are nineteen giving advise to a fifty year old, is he/she going to be biased because you are just nineteen? To be totally honest with myself I think I might, though I hope I could overcome that prejudice and look at the advice given on a practical level. So my question to the rest is should it be on all our post’s, and yes I realize we can disable it, but should it be there in the first place? I vote NO

Honestly, until you pointed it out, I had no earthly idea our ages WERE on every post. It must be a new feature.

I think it is new. I sure don't remember seeing it before.

For those that are not sure how to disable it: (because someone always asks 'how do I?' when there is a change:))

Go into your User CP > Edit Profile, use the drop down box and change it to hide age and date of birth then save your changes.

TBH, I think this just might be a good thing.:)

I don't like it. I want my age under my user CP so it's there for members to see if they want to, but I don't want it on every post. There's no good reason for it.

Just put your birthdate in your profile on the "Biography" line...no big deal.

  8. sibeer

If I do that, will I still get my 24 hours of fame on my birthday in the "Today's Birthday" section?

Personally I think it messes up the user data line, so I have removed it from mine, if you want to check my age its easily done via the profile link.

but to the point of age vs advice, I have never thought age is the issue with a reply to a techy question ( or non-techy ) as there are many levels of knowledge out there, some PC geniuses are teens and that is a fact they are brought up with PCs so the level of knowledge goes with it, however their are some pretenders who think they know all, which is why I take the information posted on its own merit for accuracy be that from a 10yr old or a 50+ yr old.

Very easy to spot the bullsh**ter ;)

    Agree with you 100% sibeer.
That is why I put my birthday down, and not my year of birth.
I don't want to be reminded, particularly by MG, how old I am.
My boys can do that well enough. Bazza

As long as it's an option, I don't see it as a big problem. Except for MrPewty, who is having too much fun with it right now. ;)

The same argument can be used for post counts (and when you became a member).

EG You have 15 posts (and became a member in 2006), giving advice to someone with 4 000 (and they became a member in 2002).

You can't really have rules based on peoples prejudice or insecurities.

Oh dear god noooooo not that one again!!! I guess this age thing is just a storm in a teacup! easily fixed by removing your age from the options, sadly or more so in a good way... further updates to the VB software will bring new and maybe not so welcome options, but most if not all are changable.

For one I prefer VB over the alternatives ;)

I only removed my age because I don't want to be reminded how old I am every time I post.

Now if they want us to post our IQ's.......

Exactly ------------ I EARNED these wrinkles and thinning hair. The hard way.

It's not the number of years that count, but what one has done with those years. Some people have literally changed the world by their twenties or mid-thirties. Others may live to 100, and for all the good or bad they may have done, they virtually may as well have never existed. That's the only real shame, in every sense of the word.

I’ve probably passed the half-way peg in life. Some would say I’ve done much, but I often think it hasn’t been enough. But then there’s presumably the other half of my life to go, I guess.

Age, like any other anniversary, is just a date.

  40. Sgt. Tibbs

I keep waiting for the thinning hair (which by genetics I should have started already), but it doesn't seem to be happening. Also, I was about six years older than any of my sisters (or mom) when I saw my first gray hair...which has not yet been joined by any friends. :D

Nope a fair amount of women on Majorgeeks too, which gives us a great mix unlike some forums........ as to lie about age, dont think any of the regulars have apart from MrPewty who I guess has decided he wanted a refund and now started on his second childhood ;)

Mines in my profile, just didnt seem necassary to have it in every post for me anyways.

Oh dear, trouble with my threads! I hope you don't get this twice.

But really, talk about what shows up on your posts!! I am "Private First Class"!!! When did that happen?? lolol But to answer your question, I was born in the year when Eisenhower wrote the following to his brother, Edgar:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

@abri, you become Private First Class because you were drafted.

As far as your age, that makes you half as old as Halo. :D

I suggest chain smoking and cheap whisky. It greatly accelerates the graying of your hair and aging in general. You can be mistaken for 60 by the time you are 40.;)

Meh...been there, done that, got the shirt. And my sister who doesn't drink or smoke started going gray when she was 26. ;)

I wasn't going to say anything, but so have I - and keep getting told I look thirty something , which is about ten years younger than I am - go figure. Wether I just have resilient D.N.A. or what, I don't know.

Then again, look at someone like Keith Richards to see the effects of a hard life. <*shudder!>.
