Thinking about replacing my current reciever, it's at least 10 years old. Been a great one and I really love the different modes it has, theatre, live, hall , etc. I haven't been able to find a reciever that I really like but I see things have changed drastically in the home theatre arena. Mostly looking at the Yamaha line, I hear good things about their Cinema DSP modes. Most of them look like they would fit the bill. I am basically looking for something that I can hook all my devices to and hopefully get better sound and eliminate some remotes to make life easier. Right now I have a panasonic 5 disc DVD, sony vcr, xbox, and satelitte tv thingy all strung together with a million wires. My dvd will do digital sound as well as the satellite tivo thingy. All this running thru a switchbox and then to my tv. Except at the moment I have the dvd connected via svideo. The sony tv only has one svideo jack.

Both digital devices say 5.1 but the receiver i'm looking at is 7.1. I'm hoping that 7.1 means the receiver will do 5.1 and then do two more speakers in another room. Not that I need that feature but it would be nice.

So, I guess what I really need is a quick lesson in the new recievers with upconversion and 5.1/6.1/7.1 pro's cons.

I don't like the idea of DSP reverb on movies or video games. The people who make it have much better reverb than a home cinema does ;). But whatever. Yamaha almost invented DSP, so I imagine it would be good.

If youre using Dolby EAX digital encoding, I *think* that it detects the encoding automatically. I.e. if its encoded in 5.1 surround, it will play it in 5.1 surround. I'm not sure you can upsample to 7.1, you would need a processor to "fake" 7.1 for you. I don't think it would sound as good as authentic 5.1 though.

Using those modes you might be able to make the rear-surround speakers mirror the front speakers.

I personally do not know any movies that are in 7.1 yet? but plan for the future i guess.

Me neither, not on DVD in any case. They better be short films :p
