home network issues

I have a laptop running vista and a desktop running xp. I recently got an air card for int access & want to set up a network. I have tried a crossover cable but having limited connectivity. Would a router solve this problem, or is it accomplishable with what I already have?

What do you want to accomplish?

All of the above. File sharing, int connection for both. The air card is my only int conn. I seem to have conflicts using a crossover cable between them. I have the aircard hooked usb to the laptop with amd dual core & vista. The desktop is amd 3200 with xp. Will a router solve the conflict? I don't need a wireless setup as both are in the same room,(when the laptop is not mobile).

 

What is the model and version of aircard?
Unless it has a cable port, I don't think you will be able to use a router.

 

Sierra wireless 595u. The only conn is usb.

 

I don't know of any way to do a router set up with a USB connection.
Someone else may know this, so they should chime in.

I think you are going to have to set up your desktop as the main ICS computer with the laptop connected by cable. If you use the laptop as the main, you will be changing the connection when you take the laptop mobile.

I tried bridging but no success. I could not because int sharing was enabled but when I tried to disable it was not showing it as being on.(options were not available)
