OK, feeling a bit like an idiot right now, but I can not get my network at home to work. I just got a linksys wireless G router with 4 port for wired, have main PC wired to router via Cat5E and 2nd PC via linksys card. all connections are working fine and I have been able to hit the net no prob with both machines.

Problem is I have both set for sharing so I can snag filed form PC 2 (my old machine) onto PC 1 (new machine). PC2 has win2kpro, PC1 has winXPpro. Network settings are all the same, I can see PC1 fro mPC2 but not access it, and I can not even find PC2 from PC1. Is it a cross windows platform issue, or is there something that i am just totally missing?

    Any help appreciated!!

First try creating the exact same user profile on both machines ...and access each at least once ...(assuming the files/folders are marked as shared) ...report back.

Actually, they are both set up withthe smae username/pw, and the same security level as well. (I use the same thing every time I set up, just keeps life easier) I was able to access the router from PC2, but not network...... I hope I am on the same page as you.

I am headed out to work, but will be back on tonight after 11pm EDT when I get home.

    Thanks and ttyl

I just made a post recently about shared folder permissions. I’m not going to type it out again, so run a search on it to find the post for a start on how to tackle your problem. What I usually do first is this:

    Start -> Run -> “\\ip address\c$”

Most likely the IP address will be something like “192.168.1.2”. “c$” is the administrative share name of the drive on that computer. So the entire command from the Run window would be:

    \\192.168.1.2\c$

That is called using the UNC, or Universal Naming Convention. I always try to use the UNC into the administrative share first before checking permissions, because it only takes a couple seconds to type in the command.

I know this sounds kind of technical, but it really isn’t. I am taking a class on technical writing right now, and the professor seems to think that using computer jargon is only to make you look smart, or to exclude people from your “inner circle”… or something. In reality, people use medical/technical/etc language because it provides a more precise way of describing things. If anything I wrote looks really confusing then say so, or look on google for the definition. Don’t fall into the trap of being insecure because people use a bunch of “scary new words” that are actually completely correct to use in some cases. Okay, I’m done now :)

Am ready to tear out my hair.... Nothing I do seems to work. Can not see the 2k machine fromthe XP machine and when I CAN see the XP machine from the 2k Machine, I can not access it, it says that acces was denied as the path is invalid.....

I am ready to scream, I have a bunch of stuff I wante to just shoot over the network, but it looks like that won't happen now... FRAGARAGABAGADAGA!!!!!

OK, feel better now. But it still isn;'t working, and I have spen the better part of this afternoon working on it.

I trialed this netwoking appliaction called Network Magic
And as the name suggests, it really is magic. I was sharing files, printers across 4 computers and it was so easy to use. I highly recommend trying it. I didn't continue after the month trial because I'm a tight-arse and didn't want to pay a yearly subscription, and I didn't use the functions of the appliaction anywhere near as aften as I thought I would.
It's really worth a look. I have never seen any networking tool so intuitive and easy to set-up/use

had the same issue with a client in a workgroup. i felt like an idiot that i could not figure out what was going on. any how i posted about it at http://forums.therosewoodgroup.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3 (company site)

anyway turn off the xp firewall, turn off simple file sharing, if all else fails boot the xp box in safe mode w/ network support and acces it.

to turn off simple file sharing go to
my computer > tools > folder options > last item in the list

also make sure they are both in the same workgroup and subnet

One thing that I see no one mentioned, firewalls on the pc. I have to allow the ip address or range that I want to access the pc in ZA. Just set up a friends network this past weekend, and same thing, could see the pc but not access it. Told the firewalls that they can allow traffic from 192.168.1.70 - 1.72 to access the pc's trusted zone. Hope that helps some.
