Homegroup Prob

Is anyone here using a homegroup with at least one 8.1 system and one 10 system, and if so is it working ok between the two? I have completely dismantled and recreated my homegroup three times now, stopping and disabling the two Homegroup services and disabling their startups on all machines before rebooting and setting it all up again. Win 10 systems are communicating between each other just fine but the one 8.1 system gets asked for a username and password when it tries to connect, but these do not exist in a homegroup of course.

To exclude the possibility that the problem is with the Win 8.1 system itself I joined an old Win 7 system into the homegroup. 8.1 can read it and it can read 8.1. It does appear that there is a homegroup bug affecting 8.1 to 10 connections.

i have this same problem sometimes when trying to connect between win7 and win10 and ive had this prob with win8.1 and win10. i got it to work only once via CMD ipconfig /renew and ipconfig /flushdns, then doing what you did, starting from scratch. but when i tried to log in a second time it didnt work. i gave up and have not tried to recreate this scenario since. on the other hand, i found it easier to set up the homegroup from the win7 system, after i set it up from there i could go from 7 to 10 no prob but not the other way around. ive settled with logging into 7, contacting 10, getting the files, contacting 8 from 7, and transferring from there. couple things to look into, win10 has awkward file sharing setting so make sure that you have all of your setting set to share, and also make sure you have 7 set up to share all of it. have you tried removing the passwords entirely and just loggin with a username only? also i recommend using this code to have easier access to the settings you want because cortana is a sly jerk who hides important stuff and doesnt give you what you search for, {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} fust create a new folder on your desktop and rename it with this code and it will become a file full of every single admin tool and setting that 10 has to offer.

Hi silvervulpus and thanks for the ideas. I do understand Homegroup thoroughly and am in no doubt at all that my settings are correct on all systems. As I said, the Win 10 systems and the Win 7 system are all all communicating fine, and Win 7 / Win 8.1 is also fine, but none of the Win 8.1 / Win 10 connections are working (asking for credentials). However there is one post among all the rubbish that I intend to try and that is to remove the homegroup from every system and, after turning every system off other than one, create a new homegroup. Then join the others to it. I have a feeling in my water that will fix it. All I need is the time to try it.

well i hope it works for you, please keep me updated, i'm interested too, for i have a similar issue with less patience and time to devote to it. also was gonna ask (since you are probably more savvy than i) if you have any ideas whats up with the 1607 update. ive been reading and replying to posts about it all night and i think it contains some critical errors, if you would not mind and have the time between homegroup loading screens, would you sift thru a few of my recent posts and let me know what you think?

Still got a lot to do but it looks as if my using a Microsoft account to sign in may be the root cause of my file sharing problems in Win 8.1 / Win 10. Very interesting read HERE for anyone interested.

Solved problem by reverting to simple file sharing, no password required. Homegroup is now completely disabled on all systems. Homegroup is good when it works but if it breaks down, as it did for me after restoring an image to one of the Homegroup systems, it can be very difficult - impossible in my case - to get it working cleanly again. Disabling Homegroup services has also knocked several seconds off startup times.
