I really could use some help suggestions with a problem I started having last night.

When I open a browser window (I use IE6) instead of it opening to my homepage it is opening with this:

    //www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
(I have had to list the link without the http: because the link won't let me list it.)

I have gone into "TOOL" then "INTERNET OPTIONS" to check my homepage and the original is still showing as my page. I have also tried resetting my homepage only to have that same site constantly overriding it.

In addition to going through all the obvious things, I have called Microsoft only to be fobbed off by them telling me because I have an OEM version of Windows XP installed, came with the DELL machine, it is a DELL problem. I called DELL and they say it is a Microsoft problem.:cry I have Googled the problem and nothing is coming up.

I do not want Internet Explorer 7 and I want to get rid of this notice. All I want is my homepage when I open the browser. Can someone PLEASE help me get rid of this? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

It should only go to that page once. If it goes there again just click on the Home page button and it will go back to your proper home page. if you then close IE down and re-open it should go to your normal home page.

It won't. This is Microsoft's way of getting you to download and upgrade to IE7.

Oh great, so what you are saying is I can't rid of the message.........wonderful, I am so happy, THANKS MR GATES!!! So this is my punishment for not wanting IE7 to screw up my machine. Hopefully someone will find a way around it, I will wait and keep my fingers crossed.
    Thank you!

    Try this:

    Start> All Program> Windows Update

    Then:

    Select CUSTOM and scan

    Uncheck/deselect IE7 then "hide" it

Install any other critical updates offered.

I honestly have no idea if this would work, but in the "restricting access to websites" sticky it shows you how to basically override the DNS process. By editing that file to get the link that your being directed toward to point to the IP address of the site that you want to go to, you may be able to trick your computer into going to the correct site. I don't know if it will work, but maybe someone else on here could tell you.

Thanks for the reply. At the chance of sounding totally dah......where can I find the Restricting Access to Websites Sticky? I did a search for it and nothing came up. I would like to have a read and give it a try.

Windows Internet Explorer 7 Forced update via WSUS February 12, 2008
For all of those systems administrators out there who have dealt with this beautiful situation before, Microsoft has once again decided that it will force IE7 onto its customers via WSUS. So, if you have blacklisted the 'upgrade' to your servers and desktops thus far, you will need to intervene yet again to stop it.

i then did a search, and came up with this.

Have you tried editing the host file? I never posted a link because I thought that the person who posted after me had a better, more correct solution. But if it didn't work, and you haven't tried editing your host file, you might want to. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25959

    Hi,

I just tried to edit the Hosts and still the same. To explain again, when I open my browser it is suppose to open to my Ebay sign in page for my homepage. In tools, internet options that is what the homepage is set to but the browser opens the the following:

    microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
(Should have www. before the microsoft but it won't show the link if I add it.)

If the edit of the Hosts would have worked it would have just displayed Page cannot be displayed and I would still have to manually select home.

This is driving me crazy and I am totally lost as to how to get rid of it.

    Any other suggestions?

    Debi :confused

Look in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\ Then in the right hand pane scroll down to start page and see if that is the correct page. If not you can edit it by right clicking on it and selecting modify.

    Hi,

Have looked and my homepage is listed correctly. I did notice further up the list First Home Page and it shows the link to that page that is overriding my home page. Now, can I just delete the entry or just change the link to my regular homepage?

I have attached a picture of what it looks like in my registry.

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't at the least edit it to read your preferred home page. I don't have it at all in my registry. You also seem to have the errant microsoft page under Search Page too.

I will delete both and hope for the best. Will let you know what happens.
