For Some reason the directions that came with the linkess router are not to clear for a rookie like me to understand. Could someone direct me with the proper directions and key information I will need to set up 1 desk top and 2 Note books to a linkess G router. My biggest issue are all of the codes I need to set up a secure net work. You Know the fill in the blank stuff/codes

    Thank YOU!!

is your router set up and useable at this point, but you just need help with setting up the security part?

will all 3 computers be connecting via wireless, or will any of them be plugged in with a network cable?

all you need to do is type the default IP address of the router into your browser so that you can 'program' the router. the default IP address of your router is contained in the owner's manual. it is something like 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.15.1. when you type that into your browser (where you usually type in an internet address (http://www.yahoo.com, for example) it will pull up a login box where it will ask you for your username and password. the default username and password for most routers is 'admin'. so type admin into both spaces and login to the router.

go to the heading that says 'Wireless' and then the subheading that says 'Wireless Security'. on that page there will be a pull-down box 'Security Mode' where you can select the type of encryption you want to use (WEP, etc.) select WEP. under that, there is another box 'Encryption Level' - select whichever one you want (more bits/hex digits = higher security) so select 64 bit or 128 bit encryption. under that, type a password that you select into the 'Passphrase for Keys' box and then press the 'Generate' button. the router will create 'keys' using your password that you just typed in. choose which key you want to be the 'default' key and click the radio button next to the corresponding key number.

now, on the wireless computers, the wireless card should pick up on the wireless signal (if you have set your router to broadcast its SSID) and a pop-up will say 'wireless networks in range - click here to connect'. (if this doesn't happen, click Start/Control Panel/Network/Wireless). when you click that it will show a list of 'available wireless networks', click on the name for your router (Linksys - you may want to change the router name in case there are other 'Linksys' routers in your area). it will say 'this network requires a key' and a box will pop up for enter the key. type the default key in that box and click 'connect'. the computers will remember the wireless key so you shouldn't have to do this every time you connect to the wireless router.

computers that are connected via a network cable to the router do not need a 'wireless' key.

i would also change the login password for your router since everyone knows it. ;)

    that should do it.
