    My lovely girlfriend volonteered me to clean her mothers computer. ugh.

    I ran into a few problems and as you will see by the dates on the logs, I worked on this over several months when I had the time.

    Initially the comp looked ok but when I went to install avg free it would not let me because, duh, in hind sight, somthing was on there preventing it. I updated xp and was able to install avg but that is when I definately noticed malware. I realize now that somone had restored the pc to its original out of box xp install without a single update. After this I smacked my forhead, stopped updating and went right into cleaning.

    At 1 point xp did update because I went to restart and it began updating during shutdown. I let it go.

    My first problem was with combo fix and avg. I was unable to get back to the computer until March I think. I updated Java again downloaded latest versions of combofix, root repeal and mgtools and found that there was an avg remover. The conflict continued even in safe mode.

    I skipped to rootrepeal but that would not run either. I finished with mgtools and attached are all of the logs that I could get.

    Thank you for all your time and energy. All of the helpers here do an amazing drop and I'm greatful you are all around!

    Destructo.

    You guys are GREEAAAT!

    Your SAS and MBAM logs are worthless as they were done 4 months ago. And your MGLogs are a month ago. We need you to re-run the scans as well as download and run the current version of MGTools.

    In the meantime, do this:
    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\V91y7x35UbVg
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~V91y7x35UbVg
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~V91y7x35UbVgr
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\temp\V91y7x35UbVg.bmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\V91y7x35UbVg.exe

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "V91y7x35UbVg"=-

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe file and attach the new C:\MGLogs.zip as well as the log from running ComboFix.

    Update your SAS and MBAM programs and attach new logs from each.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I did the fix with hjt but I still get the avg/combo fix conflict (combo fix detects avg is installed and will not continue). I used the latest avg removal tool to uninstall it.

    Please let me know if there is an alternate method or if I should skip it and go on to the other steps that you indicated.

    Thanks once again!

    Please go here and download and run the AVG Removal Tool.

    Then please try to do the fix I gave you. If we can't get Combo to run, we will use a different tool. ;)

    Hello again Tim,

    I used the avg uninstaller already to no avail. (I downloaded the latest one and for some reason combo fix still thinks avg is installed.)

    So upward and onward?

    Yes, upward and onward. See if Combo will do the fix anyway.

    I left the computer overnight (after I had ran the avg remover and tried combo the 1st time) and it seems to have restarted on its own.

    I checked for a log but there wasn't one.

    I then saw your latest post so I tried it again but it gave me the same error of "either remove avg or use another tool."

    I'm at lunch now but will check back later this evening.

    Thanks!

    We can go a different route:

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    ok,

    The regedit was a success.

    Ran avenger without any problems.

    Ran CC with only the temporary files box checked.

    Getlogs took longer than expected but it finally got through it.

    The trendmicro agreement never popped up. Assume I still had the yes file on there somwhere.

    Reinstalled avg and it pops up with a win\sys32\drivers\volsnap.sys is a rootkit--pakes.bi.

    Now back to sas and mbam?

    Logs are attached.

    Here's the log file. Went off without a hitch.

    I await the next step!

    And thank goodness this one was easy. The step before this took me forever to attach the dang logs.

    Anyway, thanks again and talk to you soon.

    That found and fixed the issue. Tell me what malware issues you are still having, if any.

    There does not seem to be anything else popping up.

    I ran an avg scan and it came clean.

    Nothing popping up on the taskbar.

    Should I re-run sas, mbam or anything else to double check?

    The machine still is only updated to service pack 2 if thats any concern.

    And thats about it I suppose.

    Read ya soon

    Yes, you can re-run SAS and MBAM to double check, but they both will probably come back clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
