    Yet more grief.
Since 'upgrading' to windows 7 none of the hyper links in my hotmail messages are active.
They highlight when I hover over them but do nothing when clicked.
    Any clues?
    Cheers

The hyperlink icon only works once unless you do the following
click on emoticon icon and select emoticon (this just to make the hyperlink icon active again)
then type hyperlink and mark it and copy it with ctl c, click on hyperlink icon
and paste hyperlink in where http:// is and click on insert.
The hyperlink should now work. Hope this helps

    Hi Nick.
We may be at crossed purposes here.
I meant that any link in any message doesn't work, ie I had to open a new page to get to your message as the link in my hotmail mesage telling me you had replied would not work.
None of them do, say I get a groupon mail and try to go to one of the deals, it does nothing.

Sorry,, sounds like an active pop-up blocker, check the blocker and disable(or turn off)it ,then try opening a link. In IE ,go to tools then Pop-Up Blocker.

I go to tools in ie and don't have a option for popup blocker.
I have the usual blockers in internet options > privacy but that one says it notifies me if a pop up is blocked.
I don't think the links I am clicking are associated with pop ups.
They used to open in a new ie window taking me to the vendors site, for example, groupon or major geeks.

Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
Right click the value for the .html key and select Modify...
Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile" (or from FireFoxHTML to htmlfile)
Try this ,,I maybe a little confused here,,is this just e-mail or all links,it's been a rough day,3yr.old broke collar bone.
If all links in IE won't open try to reset IE,,Tools ,Internet Options,Advanced ,Reset IE ,,check delete all settings box.

    Collar bone OUCH!

It was any links in a Hotmail message or ad.
I tried downloading chrome and setting that as my default browser.
The links work now but after just getting used to IE 9 with the task bar icon showing what pages you have open I now find chrome opens different tabs at the top of the page. I set IE 9 as my default again but the links still wouldn't work.
I am now using chrome to see if I can get used to the damn thing.
Problem is when I click the right hand close button out of habit it closes all the tabs without asking so I lose all my pages.
Been looking at ways to personalize it. I just want it to open a new WINDOW when I ask it NOT a tab. I'm quite capable of handling more than one window, I think!!
I'm sure they do these things to annoy us. :)

Ah, just found the 'new window' option, but why can't I have a new window open when I click the icon pinned to my task bar, or can I?
    I must do more looking.

    I hate hate hate it!
I just want IE to work.
There must be something i'm missing.
It will be something simple (like me).
With chrome the tab situation is mental, I have been using it for a bit now but I still forget ans press the right hand close button and lose all my browsing.
    It's pants!!

    Now then.
Apparently you can't disable tabbed browsing in Google Chrome!!
Bad move Google, I see many would like to use your browser but hate tabbed browsing (as I do) but you see fit not to add the option to disable it.

As for my link problem in IE 9, it seems to be something to do with third party sites.
I have visited a few sites and links to their own pages work fine.
However, if i click an outside link such as the Google Chrome add on the forums homepage on this site it doesn't go anywhere.
That is what is happening with my e-mail links, I thought it was a Hotmail problem but it is (so far) on all outside links.
I have tried the reg edit to 'html' but still no good.
    Any more clues?

It appears to be fixed, hoorah!
Apparently the same thing happened with IE 8 so I tried a fix for that and it has done the trick.
Here it is for tech geeks.

    http://http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_7/links-in-will-not-open-a-new-window-or-tab-in/e312e580-1cbc-496b-8c6b-b69b8535a7bb?page=1&tm=1327061451754

Shame the pin heads at Microsoft can't give us a fully working product, instead they give us something with the same problems as before.
All I need now is for each window I open to be maximised, then I can go have a kip!

    No worries.
    Every little helps.
Even the bit you said about changing the registry prompted me to install Chrome, that made me hate it cause I can't abide tabbed browsing and made me more determined to sort IE9 out.
    So, from small acorns....................
