Hourglass problem?

I have had good results in the past removing spyware but this particular problem has me stumped.

Symptoms-the windows "hourglass" will begin flashing like it is processing something. I am still able to use programs etc but computer performance is bogged down. If I attempt to run Spybot, Microsoft anti-spyware etc....while in normal windows mode (with the hourglass flashing) my computer will restart on its own. If I don't do anything and leave it running with the hourglass flashing, it will after some time (hours) shut itself down.

So far the only fix I have been able to devise is restarting in safe mode (whenever the thing starts flashing) and run all of my spyware programs. This seems to cripple whatever it is for a few hours and then it just randomly starts back up.

I don't see any unusual processes running and I haven't been able to find any other info on this. I believe there was one other poster a few threads down describing similar symptoms. I also tried all of the things described on the "before you post" thread. Hopefully someone can help me out. I am near the point of Formatting.

This is a strange one! Let's make sure there is no obvious malware at play.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:
