:waveHouse panel approves bill forcing ISPs to log users’ web history
The House Judiciary Committee approved legislation on Thursday that would require Internet service providers (ISPs) to collect and retain records about Internet users' activity.

CNET reported the bill would require ISPs to retain customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses for 12 months.

The bill passed by a vote of 19 to 10, and is aimed at helping law enforcement track down pedophiles.

"The bill is mislabeled," Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), a senior member of the panel told CNET. "This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It's creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes."
    Webmaster's Commentary:

This has actually precious little to do with finding pedophiles, and everything to do with spying on everyone using the net.

Lawmakers are about to push the American people under a bus with this legislation, and into the dark abyss of Code Napoleon Law, where everyone was considered guilty until proven innocent.

First and 4th Amendment to the Constitution, rest in peace; between this pending legislation, the Patriot Act, and the consistent, brutal beatings you have received at the hands of the likes of Janet Napolitano, Director of Homeland "Security" and John Pistole, Director of the TSA (Travel Suppression Agency), you have been thrown out as functioning legal protections for American citizens.

Is there something out there that will prevent the government from spying on us?rolleyes

There seems like there must be something that can override this:confused

TBH I think that data from internet usage has always been collected by the security services and a law or bill just makes it justified in a way.... I have my reasons and sources as to data collection and only have to research Magic Lantern, Carnivore, Echelon etc too see why we are not safe as for data.

:wave There is really no justification for spying on the people or collecting data other than the sole purpose of controlling the masses. This must be stopped.:major

Thanks for telling us about this, Spirittoo. I think you have already mentioned two things that should could overcome this, the first amendment for one. We should be able to express our opinions on the web or wherever without fear of being put in a database, excluding incitements to overthrow by force, that kind of thing. The thing is who is going to launch a constitutional challenge to that law?
There are laws in US today that would not survive constitutional challenge, but they haven't been challenged and so folks are still subject to them. I personally don't see the Patriot Act as being constitutional. A perhaps not so well known aspect of it is that the bank must now report deposits of over $500, and other aspects of your banking business. My bank told me this was a result of the P. Act.
Yes, we have taken a kind of back door slide into Napoleonic Code.

Sheena, Louisiana is under Napoleonic Law.

I find one thing seriously wrong with this bill. " Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)" That one, well let me be nice and just say I think she is ahhh, 'touched'. Don't think this bill will pass the house.

If passed I think some serious 1A issues would result. A bit OT, but with all the recent sexual problem in the gubment, you think they would have their hands full solving their own problems. Wait, maybe 'having their hands full' is not the best thing to say.... rolleyes:-D

Just search her name on YouTube....

Well I don't know if you have notice or not ... but our corrupted us government has pretty much trashed the constitution ... the so called patriot act is clear indication of that not to mention all the online news reports of suppression by police and the government.

They have violated so much of the constitution with no challenges of any meaning that I doubt this will be challenge.

It going to be totally us to "we the people" to bring about change ... if we depend upon Washington to solve the problem and corruption it's simply not going to happen.

There must be some kind of software out there that will prevent them from doing what they plan to do and I'm going to find it.:p

    spirittoo,
If this passes and one uses software to get around it somehow, couldn't that be illegal? There is already software that says it lets one be anon. on net. Whether that would still be legal, or hide one from one's isp I don't know. I imaging routers would have to be addressed too.
The government does need to be 'made over', much much leaner, more efficient, and client [citizen] centered. I have seen government and our reps. go from at least acting concerned when we phoned them long ago to becoming arrogant people who do us a favor to listen to what we say. I think a big problem in trying to get something done in the US is just its vastness and the huge population. It is very frustrating.

:waveI wouldn't care if it is legal or not ... the government is breaking laws and the constitution with impunity. It's time to fight back against the tyranny. It's time for American to start saying no.:major

For accuracy's sake, I need to amend what I have said about
Napoleonic Law. It does not, so far as I understand it, actually say one is guilty until proven innocent. It was seen as being that way by many critics because it required remand for serious crimes, like murder, and because in the distant past in France the prosecutor was also the judge, albeit the jury was ordered to also pay attention to the cares of the defendent. So to many this was in effect seen as guilty till proven innocent. So really, using the Nap. Code as an example of a type of justice that said one is guilty till proven innocent was inaccurate. I should have used facts, not reputation. Sorry, and sorry for what I said about that to you, Fred-G. Today much of Louis. law is like the rest of US. And there is much to recommend the Nap. code.

    Spirittoo,
Prisons are the newest good place to be employed in America. I remember when CO's were lowest on the education scale and lowest paid. Now they have some training, and are very well paid. In Crescent City, CA, home of Pelican Bay Prison, a hard case prison, the CO's are the elite. So it is no wonder that people nowadays are locked up at the drop of a hat for doing very little. Witness the Martha Stewart debacle; now she was really public enemy #1. Many more examples everyday. Watch the National Geographic Channel's "Hard time" series to see just what a continuous hell the American prison is. I know of alot of young folks who acted without thinking carefully about it first, and have paid the price.
