:) Now that I have your attention, the problem is with my Disk Cleanup.

    >Using Windows XP SP2-cable hookup.

    >In the past this would probably take 3min. max, to complete all the selected items.

    >It is now taking up to 10min.for scanning and cleaning, without any changes being made at all.

    >I did have the number of days selected at 20, and slid this down to 8.

    >I currently have over 300,000 files in the compressed old files line, indicating the amount of space that would be saved.

    >Problem is, Disk Cleanup, is not doing it's job. Nothing changes!

    Any suggestions?
****Also when I right clicked on the Compress old files line it brought up the box,Downloaded Program Files****3 Programs are listed in this box.
    >Java Runtime Environment
    >Java Runtime Environment
    >Yahoo Backgammon
****Should I delete one of the Java Runtime Environments from this list?***
    As always, Mucho Gracias! :)

i found that if you turn view all files and folders on and manually delete the temp. files in documents and settings >temporary internet files and then try disc cleanup, it runs so much quicker. my server computer took over 20 mins to pick up everything in disc cleanup and i never saw the outcome, so i manually deleted the temp. files, cleared my history, ran a defrag and hey disc cleanup works, no problems!

BEER MONKEY WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME!!!!

    >I ran the software you suggested.

    >I then re-ran Disk Cleanup

    >Now the Comprss old files line reads 923,000!!!!! That's a 600,000 increase from the last run.

    >Is something else going on here?

    Please, Please, Please,

    >macadamm, will try your suggestion also.

    Macadamm, Anyone, HELP!!!
    >Tried you suggestion, got my compressed old files down to 400,000.

    >When I re-entered a second time(out of curiosty) it was back up to 750,000.

    >Still taking unusually long, compared to my past runs.

    >While I was individually deleting the temp files from my daughter's folder, Avast popped up with a warning. It was the same (VC) Trojan, it has picked up on in the last few days(which was located in her documents, files and settings), I just hit delete because I was in the middle of deleting the files.

    >Does this mean a Trojan is lurking somewhere else that maybe Avast isn't picking up on?

    >Ran Hijack This>It comes up clean.
*****Not really sure where to go from here, but I do suspect, that something is running afoul****
    >Ran the defrag, eventhough I just ran it last week.

    Hi,

    >Ran all the services listed in the article"in safe mode with networking" I will only list the ones which found something.

    >RAN:Trend Micro Scan Results:
(Virus) Troj SMALL.KU (Scan Result) Non Cleanable (File) C:\x.cab*VM.exe*
***It was unable to delete the infected entire contents of
the compressed file (`C:\x.cab'iA ) It then asked if I
to delete the whole file, I clicked on Yes.***
Question: Off hand do you know if this file is used for anything? LOL

    >Ran CCleaner [Removed 0.77MB]

    >Ran Ad-Aware SE Results: Identified 101, In Quarantine is 89 objects. Should these be deleted on next run?

    >Ran Spybot-70 entries fixed. One could not be fixed.
    Hunt Bar (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_\Software\BTIEIN

    >Secon run of Trend Micro Scan-Came up clean.

***I then went back to Disk Cleanup to see if there were any changes. The compressed old files went way down 71,185KB. All other files are down to zero. It is also running back at normal speed.
***Just curious as to why it won't empty or compress these remaining 71,185KBfiles? I went back in and changed the # of days to 1, but this did nothing. Any reasons for this, that you could think of? Should I just accept the fact that it won't compress down to zero?

Thanks for you help, I'm assuming the Creepy Critter that Micro found was the problem.

ok when i run adaware i delete everything it finds, but check to make sure it's not an important file - rarely is!
also, have you got an up-to-date virus scanner on there? anything like AVG free edition should do you fine.

you should also run "C-Cleaner", "Empty Temp." and "Cleanup!" at least once a day to ensure your system is stable.
i'm unsure as to why 71,185KBfiles won't compress, as mine always compress to 0, - hmmmm...
    have you defragged recently too?

Can anyone else add any insight as to what might be happening?

    >I run Avast Home Edition, also use Spy Sweeper.

    >I always clear my cache and empty my prefetch before exiting.

    >I run defrag once a week

    > I do Disk Cleanup once a week( which is why I know, the # of files were way out of whack.)

    >***That is why I'm nervous. Not sure if I really got to the root of the problem*** Thanks for your help :)

    >Maybe this added info might jumpstart someone's memory, as to what might be going on. Heck if I know.

    >I just tried to run Disk Cleanup in safemode with System Restore turned off. When I did everything cleared.

    >I then rebooted and with System Restore still off, ran the Disk Cleanup. The same 71,185KBfiles in the Compressed old files were back.

    >Can anyone guess as to what is going on?

think about the language "COMPRESS OLD FILES" .. today is older than yesterday is it not? the default is 50 days. So more files are added the list every day after 50 days. Depening on the size of the files, your KB could increase slowly or quickly. The "OLD FILES" is actually referring to files that have not been accessed in a specified amount of time.
You have 69.5 MB of files that are older than the alotted time for not being accessed.

Your answer is a logical one,but does it apply if I set the # of days down to 1 or 5 or 8?

  14. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

as long as time progresses it will apply if you set it to .000000000000001 seconds.

O.K. thanks for the input. I just wanted to make sure no viruses, trojans, or other malware was preventing this from going down to zero. I just never seemed to have a problem in the past, that's all.

p.s. Accidently clicked on your profile, you're a cutie! ;)

No I'm not hittting on ya, I'm married. :)

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

    heh..thanks ;)

Well, what's preventing it from going to 0 is you. ;) everytime you check that box it adds more to the compressed files total byte count. If you want compressed files to be zero then uncompress those files that were compressed.
