How 2 play mp4 in wmp?

How do I get mp4s to play successfully in latest version (11) of WMP (in XP)?
They try and fail to d/l codec. I've searched 'net with no luck.
Note that they play in WMP Classic!!

 

I'll be interested in any answers, but I think you have to convert mp4 to mp3 first.

I was talking about mp4 movies, so I assume you mean mpeg / mpeg3.
I don't want to have to convert, due to time and increased size of file, or use an alternative player.
I just can't understand why microsoft haven't sorted it so that mp4s play in its latest version of WMP?!?!

 

I installed this codec pack:

...and everything plays in WMP, including mp4 and even QuickTime files/streaming video.

 

Ta, tried that, but it failed to install, maybe because it is for vista, and I am using XP (as stated).

 

A Google search of "MP4 in WMP" yields the following:

In short, Microsoft cannot be bothered to properly implement the playback of MP4 files. You would be better off sticking with Media Player Classic, which is provided in the Combined Community Codec Pack.

It's called Vista Codec Pack, but it works on every OS from NT on up.

 

Well, it failed to fully install, but afterwards mp4 movies played in WMP, even after removal of that codec pack, although it had changed all movie types to play in Nero, but that was easy to change back.........WEIRD!
