how about a boot sector?

Hey geeks, this geek's got a question for other programmer geeks.

    Rhetorical Q:
Is it possible for you to write such a thorough .exe that cleverly disregards/blocks/redirects keyboard signal to mobo? And if so, I'd like to see it in assembly :major

Just wandering b/c I've got a hunch about this system I'm working on and everything seems to be in working order yet the keyboard I'm using (which indeed functions correctly) isn't working. I've eliminated most other issues and figured it's a clever boot sector but Idk anyone that can write code like that to:
-disrupt bootstrapping if media is in cdd (causes system to hang itself instead of restarting when there isn't media in cdd)
-disable keyboard if no media in cdd and restart indefinitely

I'm just wandering since I plan on fdisking that hdd to hell and back, and I'd like to know if it really is possible to be so thorough like that.

    Any takers? thx

You are saying that if there is no CD in the drive, it keeps restarting, but it works if there is a bootable CD in the drive? Does the keyboard work when accessing BIOS setup? If not, it's more likely BIOS than the boot sector. If a system doesn't work well enough to boot properly because of hardware issues, sometimes it will restart, although it usually hangs. If the keyboard works when started from CD, and you can access BIOS setup before the bootstrap is loaded, then the problem would seem to be on the HDD. It may be in the bootstrap, or a file loaded soon after.

    Hey PC thx for replying

Let me start off by saying my new keyboard that I just bought in the past 24 hrs isn't getting through at all, not even as the only peripheral connected, not even when I've tried the PS/2 adapter attached, not even when I've tried straight USB, not even a little bit, and yet it still powers up - considering little green light under num lock is lit brightly...

But to answer your questions, yes when there's a cd in the cdd booting up seems to start fine until I get to the "Press any key to boot from cd....." prompt then it just hangs afterward. Cannot access BIOS setup.

What I have discovered is the BIOS cd I made to update current BIOS on system works but can't get the job done. I followed the steps I read somewhere online to burn a cd w/AWDFlash, drdosmin, and the BIOS update to see if that'll get it done but the keyboard issue just bursts my bubble like a bully in the playground.

Needless to say, I've attempted many different things and I'm running outta options before I resort to buying this system off the client just so I can beat it to :crap

Think you can help me out? thx

Sorry this is late...don't know if it will help.

You could try taking the CMOS battery out for a few minutes.

If you can get a floppy to work, maybe you can do something like reflash the BIOS, perhaps with the older version, if the newer one doesn't work?

Some motherboards may let you replace the BIOS chips?

a bit about flashing bios from a floppy:
