Hi, daft as it may sound, file explorer (windows explorer as I knew it until now ) has a dead pan flat dull uninteresting bland look, folders are just yellow rectangles, and remain so when double clicked.
Now I have been with PCs since win95, why has Msoft decided on this ?
I read somewhere right click the icon and in properties allocate an icon, I do so and see an open folder, select it, but no change, relaunch explorer, still no change, dclick another folder, no change.

How does one get an open folder icon ?

also I have loaded on Open Shell in the hope it would give back the 3D effect vertical divider between left and right panes and right pane and further right preview pane, as well as scroll bars with the highlight and shadow edge, and decent sized tool icons with a subtle 3D shadows and highlights to them. The 3D subtle effects made the visual experience of windows PC's most rewarding, like an old pair of slippers. Now its all gone, dead flat, boring, sort of windows 79, perhaps in due course Msoft will add in those effects and declare it new and visually pleasing, hoping that the generation that had the flat pack version will shout with joy on seeing 3D effects.

Open shell fails to make any notable differences, GUTTED....no 3D edges to windows, so you see where to click and drag. Have I missed a setting ?

2 days trying to get it functional and looking decent. very disappointed with Msoft for removing what wasnt doing any harm and spoiling the show.

and non opening folders . OMG.

I have done the untick drop shadows desktop icons thing, and also its 0 in registry, AND THEY KEEP COMING AND GOING.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAGH !

reboot and gone, then select some menu and notice they are back again.
3 days of win10 installing nd not even installed a prog yet, trying to get win10 looking ok.

If I did a printscreen of win7, then save it via pshop, later on open it from explorer it would appear actual size,in win 10 its half off the screen and half size so needs bringing in and zooming to get to actual pixel size, no scroll bar for those that are taller than screen, to move up and down.

so a search *profile* on C drive (and its an SSD with just win 10 on it) takes 3 mins , results have no name header bar to sort them by clicking on it, Stuff like that I have always taken as normal, all gone now.

why is it so damn slow ? can one bench test it to see if thats normal ?

ANYHOW, THAT FOLDER ICON, HOW ?????

Put a file in the folder. The icon opens up.

    Hi,
Not sure creating a file so as to get a folder to display its open is a solution, so you suggest every time I open a folder and it still shows a closed folder icon, to create a file and then place it into the folder to make the folder icon change to an open one. So in the course of a day if I open 200 folders I must make 200 files and put them in those folders to give visual feedback I have opened a folder ? I end up with files that dont belong, in folders . should I remove the file from the folder when I move to another folder I wish to view ?

Well here we go, make a file, drag drop it into a folder and the folder remains shut icon.

Sorry, I'm not running Win11 yet so I didn't quite realize what you were experiencing. You can try a 3rd party app to customize the look & feel of the environment. Not sure if it will have what you want but still might be worth a look:

So you want the folder to look open in the left pane (tree view) of explorer?
