My GF's had issues with her laptop. This message being the lastest of those issues: A windows generated error message comes up saying...
    SynTPEnh.exe-Bad Image

The application or DL C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check his against your installation diskette.

    That's one...the other is:
    RUNDLL

    Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnn.dll

    Access is denied.

Lately we've been battling some nasty stuff that she caught by downloading from Limewire. I had thought PC Doctor had gotten rid of most of it. But apparently we still have problems. I would really like to avoid having to lay out XP on it again. And backing up her stuff is a pain she has alot on her harddrive. Any help's appreciated. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm actually now heavily considering just wiping out her HD and reinstalling XP. If i try to back up her pictures and documents will the malware accompany it? I thought no because it's primarily affecting the browsers and not files.

It's your choice on what approach you prefer to take. But a new install involves more than you may think. Especially to get back to a level of where you system is at. You have to consider all of the below:
    • you have to backup all you own data, settings, configurations etc and first you have to know what/where all of these are. And you have to have the medium (burnable media, second hard drive, tape drive [yuck] )
    • then you must make sure you have the necessary disks to reinstall not just your OS but all other software you use especially protection before going online
    • then fdisk, format, reinstall the OS
    • now reinstall all your software especially protection
    • get online (requires some setup and config that novices have problems with)
    • download updates for OS
    • download updates for protection software
    • download updates for all other software
    • tweak all software back the way you like it. Including Desktop settings, icons etc.
    • create all the folders that you use for everything in your normally routines
    • re-load from your backups to get data back, to get settings, Favorites,.....etc back
    • now over the next two weeks you will realize that you forgot to backup some stuff and also you will keep finding something else that you need to reinstall.

It would actually be easier just to remove the malware. We removed this particular infection many many times per day.

There is not guarantee that you will not have infections in backed up data. It is not true that this infection is not affecting files. You will more than likely have a load of files infected related to this infection. While it is unlikely that this infection (Vundo is what I'm referring to) would infect pictures and documents, I don't know what other infections you may have and thus as I said there are no guarantees. In truth the only thing that is really guaranteed is to not backup anything and then just deletec partitions, format, and reinstall (but from totally guaranteed to be clean media).
