I don't know much about ip stuff but I need to know how to be able to change my ip address at will. I know about turning off the modem and letting it reset. That worked at first but now it doesn't. Even if I keep it all unplugged and disconnected from power for over 10 mins... it won't change the ip anymore. (which means it's prolly a dynamic connection, right? cuz it changes? A static ip would mean that it's the same ip address ALL the time, correct?) It used to change only after a few seconds unplugged and then it suddenly stopped. I've cleared all caches. I've tried the commands at the dos prompt of typing in "cmd" and then typing "ipconfig /release" but then I get the error of "The requested operation requires elevation". I have no clue what I am doing.. LoL .. :p

    Can anybody help me? :-D

    Pretty please??? :-o

    I have windows vista
    My internet connection is DSL

I appreciate any and all advice! :)

    Hi EnchantedDreams,

    Try this approach...

    1. disconnect from the router connection.
    2. go to the properties of the vista network connection.
    3. open the TCP/IPV4 option.
    4. In the "use the following ip address:" section, add an ip address that is different from the one you had.

    example:

If you were using 192.168.0.14 type in 192.168.0.15.
Then type in the subnet mask that is always used, example: 255.255.255.0
Then type in the Default gateway that is always used, example: 192.168.0.1.
    click ok twice.

    5. reconnect to the router connection. *You won't be able to browse the internet.
    6. disconnect from the router connection.
    7. return to the vista network connection, TCP/IPV4 option and change the setting to Obtain ip address automatically and click ok twice.
    8. reconnect to the router connection. You should now have an ip address that is different from 14 and be able to browse the internet again.

I have DSL, and my ISP assigned address changes each time I reset the modem . . . or at least it used to. Not looked at it in a while.

I've been told that cable internet providers assign you a static address that never changes.

I'm with Digitalocksmith in being unclear what the issue is - network woes?

It's a stupid reason really.. lol ... why I need to change the ip.
I'm a HUGE X-Files fan and I've never EVER been able to watch the whole entire series from beginning to end. I've missed a few episodes as well. But I am way too broke to be able to buy them or rent them to watch them. So I tried to find them on sites like Hulu but they don't have them. I found this one site that did and I have been having fun with it and trust me I need the distraction right now... lol. But the site stops the video after a certain amount of time and I have to wait like an hour to finish watching the episode. Otherwise I have to pay to watch it nonstop. I can't afford that either. I need the distraction to take my mind off of how hard my life is right now. (don't we all? lol ) So I researched it on the internet and some sites said if I change my ip address that the video site won't be able to time how long I watch the video so therefore it can't stop the video and make me wait an hour to finish watching it. It worked at first. Every time the video stopped .. I unplugged my modem ...waited a few minutes... plugged it back in ... refreshed the page.. and there was the rest of the video untimed. :)
But it suddenly stopped working. Now the ip never changes.

Am I doing a bad thing? Is this something wrong that I shouldn't be doing-??

I don't want to get in trouble.. :--(
