How do I create a music file?

My dear mother is about to die of cancer, and I'm creating a slide show as a tribute to her, using Roxio easy cd creater 5. The problem I have is that it only allows you to attach one music file. One song is not long enough for the length of the slideshow, and I would like to add more of her favorites, so that you don't keep hearing the same song repeat too many times. Is there a way to sort of "connect" 3 or 4 songs so that they can be used as 1 file, and do it so that they still appear to have a space between them, so that the change isn't too abrupt? I hope that's clear. I thought I had more time to do this, but time is short now, and I want this to be done right.

I've done this plenty with some high-end audio editing software, like Sound Forge or Cool Edit, but those are really pricey.

I'm sure there is a way to do it using more basic applications. Hopefully someone will have a better answer.

You might be able to get a trial version of a program that can do this if you are only doing it this one time. I got a bunch from download.com but they were all too expensive for me to buy.
