how do i figure out what type of memory stick i need?

hey guys, i am looking to buy some more memory for my dell. i was wondering how i know which one to get (ex. pc2700, pc 3200) all that. how do i figure this out. thanks guys.

Download and install Everest http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Once you install it, go to the Motherboard tab, then SPD. It will tell you everything you need to know.

 

Also, check out the motherboard section for the name and model of your motherboard. Then go to the manufacturers site and see what type of memory your board supports. It may support fasted RAM then is installed.

Just remember if you buy faster (i.e you buy PC3200 and you have PC2700 installed) the faster memory will run at the lower speed.

ok i found the page on dells site for memory upgrade in my system. it knows what my system is and says i can buy pc3200 from them or 2700 for my system. it currently has pc2700 but they will sell me pc3200. so can i go out and buy pc3200 and it will work. that is what i am assuming. if your confused by my post:

You can also go to www.crucial.com, and enter your exact make and model of name brand computer, and it will tell you what your options are. Crucial makes quality RAM, and it's what's already installed in your Dell. Probably cheaper than buying it from Dell, too.

Yes the PC3200 will work but it will run at PC2700. I would go with the 3200 since you could always replace the slower stick if you wish.

Yeah, you really don't want to buy from Dell.

I just got a stick of Crucial from Newegg for my Dell. It gave me no problems with the stick of Nanya that was in it already from dell. It's hard to beat the prices and service from Newegg.

 

yeah i had no intention of buying from dell, i was just using there numbers cuase they made this machine.
