    Hi,

I am having trouble getting rid of all Norton components. I have uninstalled the program from add/remove programs. I then ran the norton uninstaller and ccleaner. Using task manager I see symlcsvc.exe is running, and using msconfig Symantec Core LC shows up under the services tabas running. How can I get rid of these. Is it going to cause problems if I don't? Thank you in advance for any help.

What version and what products do you have installed?

The programs were Norton Internet Security 2006 and Norton Systemworks 2006. I downloaded and ran SymNRT and that did not remove those either.

I have been using these utilities for a while and not once have I seen them not work.

Did it run successfully? Did you reboot?

If they still are not gone, download Your Uninstaller! 2006 5.0.0.256, save to desktop and install.

Locate the Norton products and uninstall this way. This will remove them with no problems if they are still there.

The utility seemed to run successfully. It would hang for a bit at processing MSI's by product code, but then it would finish and say that all products had been removed and to reboot which I did. I checked Task Manager and symlcsvc.exe is sitll there running and taking up resources, and I checked msconfig and under services Symantec Core LC is still there running. I downloaded Your Uninstaller and the only thing that showed up was Symantec Web Support Tools which the program removed. I needed that particular tool to chat online with them. I rebooted and the original problem is still there. I chatted online with Symantec and they say I will have to manually edit the registry, they were suppose to email me the instructions which they did not. I have no idea of how to edit the registry, I have not had to do that before.

Update... I chatted online with Symantec again today and they walked me through some steps for manually deleteing folders on the C drive, and then walked me through deleteing some registry keys. Those steps removed the symlcsvc.exe in the task manager but not the Symantec Core LC listed in the msconfig services tab. So after doing some more digging on the net I found that I had already done what was needed except using hijackthis. I used that and it revealed the entry for Symantec Core LC. I let hijackthis fix it and now the entry is no longer in the services tab of msconfig so it must be gone finally. I have been unable to locate anything else on the drive with any reference to Symantec so I should finally be free of them. Just one big pain in the rear. I am not sure why the removal tool didn't work but the Symantec person says that this has happened before. I don't think that I will ever use a Symantec product again. I have never had this much of a problem getting rid of a program. All your help is greatly appreciated. I have always received good advice here and I tell others that have problems to come here as well. Thanks again.

    Hi,
I have read that thread a few times now. I currently use some of the suggestions that are given. I have Zone Alarm Pro, Kaspersky antivirus, Spysweeper, I always keep everything updates from windows to all other programs that are capable of being updated. I also use Ccleaner and perform weekly scans. That might be why I have only ever had one infection and people around me get infected all the time. They just never learn.

    Hi,
I have read that thread a few times now. I also direct other people to that thread. I currently use most of the suggestions that are given. I have Zone Alarm Pro, Kaspersky antivirus, Spysweeper. I also use ad-aware and spybot. Is it necessary to have those when I just bought spysweeper? I always keep everything updates from windows to all other programs that are capable of being updated. I also use Ccleaner and perform weekly virus and spyware scans. That might be why I have only ever had one infection and people around me get infected all the time. They just never learn. One other thing maybe someone can help me with is how many processes are normal to see in the task manager. I have 55 most of the time. When I had Norton there were more. I have checked them out and they all seem to be good things and not malware. Is there a way to have fewer and have better boot times, not that mine is slow, just wondering. Thanks. Sorry about the double post time ran out before I could finish editing the post.

Yes, you must have an antivirus, firewall and antispy for best protection.

Personally I use Spy Sweeper, AVG AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm.

Thank you for the reply. What I meant was are spybot and ad-aware necessary since I just purchased Spysweeper? I understand the need for the three types of programs (antivirus, firewall, and antispy). Thanks again.

If you purchased Spy Sweeper you don't need any other antispy programs IMO.
