How Do I Get This Sound To Stop ?!?

All of a sudden my computer's internal speaker maks a "beep" when I do certain things.

Such as when I get a triangle with exclamation point message window.

Such as closing notepad & getting the message "the text has changed. Do you want to save the changes?"

Such as when WORD finishes spell check.

This beep is coming from the computer, not from the speakers.

It is really annoying; I prefer silence.

How do I turn it off?

    Windows XP. Gateway FX.

    Thanks.

Easy, go into sounds and mute Windows sounds. I don't run XP anymore but just search for that in the Help section and it should direct you exactly to the proper area.

    Kinda funny considering your alias.:-D

It's not a Windows sound - it's a computer sound. The computer's internal speaker is beeping, not the speakers or the Windows sounds.

That's really weird!:confused Usually, beeps are the harbingers of doom telling you where there may be an issue, not when a machine is working.

Find out what BIOS you have first and then google that. It might help you figure out what's wrong. I'm grasping at straws here.:-o

I still think you have to find the Windows sound app. Perhaps there's another app. Sorry I can't help you more. Wait for someone else better qualified.

Familiar with the inside of a computer? There's a speaker plug that looks somewhat like this:

Usually it leads to the very front of your desktop.
If you unplug it from the motherboard (it has 4 pins) while the PC is off, the internal speaker sounds should desist.

Just to double check, go to CONTROL PANEL > SOUND, click on the "Sounds" tab and choose "No Sounds" from the drop-down menu. Once you've done this, double check the list of sounds to be sure an audio/speaker icon isn't showing to the left of each item.

    Hope this helps. :)

Good idea - just be careful. If the speaker is hard-wired to the motherboard (some OEM systems), do not attempt to remove it or you'll damage the motherboard.

Hehehe, an equitable exchange but I'd rather solve it first.;)

Thanks for the idea, thisisu and for the warning, gman863.

    I think I found a different solution.

    I hope it sticks.

I had two simultaneous problems, this one and my iPhone stopped showing up on iTunes on my Windows PC.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes but my iPhone still didn't show up and there were indications that the reinstall was incomplete.
I uninstalled iTunes again and did not reinstall it,.......and,......NO beeps from the motherboard speaker!

As you said, augiedoggie, "beeps are the harbingers of doom telling you where there may be an issue, not when a machine is working" or, in this case, when a program wasn't working. BTW the only other time I ever hear the motherboard speaker is when I have to log into an ancient remote system that runs on DOS!

What do you think of this cause & solution !?!?
