I downloaded and installed VirtualDub. Then I downloaded and installed K-lite codec pack FULL. I opened VirtualDub and saw that the codecs didn't load. I don't know what I did wrong. Could you explain step by step please? BTW, I have Windows 7 home edition, computer is 32bit

my limited understanding of the whole video editing process... the k-lite codecs extend windows media player ability to play videos of different formats. that's it main purpose. i have used virtualdub in the past, but that was for processing raw video capture from fraps. the different choices in virtualdub are included in the program itself, and i don't believe that virtualdub can use any codec that is not a part of itself. it is any older program that probably will not see any more updates. not sure what else to tell you except that the guy who wrote virtualdub would have to release a newer version that could make use of those newer codecs, and that is unlikely.

i do feel your pain, or i should say, from time to time, that i get to re-live my past nightmarish forays in video editing. it seems more black art and secretive than any form of a joyous kumbaya experience. and good, free video tools, like virtualdub, are few and far between. also, i don't have any suggestions either. the only time, now a days, when i dabble with videos, is helping my mom with videos from her bird watching trail camera, and i do that on my mac with a similar free program that is older, has not seen updates for years, but does process the AVI videos and stitch them together.

    good luck with it!

wow, my bad. this type of information is what i was looking for years ago when my brother and a friend [ within a span of a week ], asked me to teach them how to work with videos, something i had never done before. i found a couple of programs, including virtualdub, spent a week reading through tutorials and articles and faqs, and doing some initial testing, and ended up telling that them they are on their own with the whole video editing thing. maybe it was my older slower computer at the time, since it took forever to process even small video files, and then when you slog through all of the 14000 different settings, the complexity just gave me brain freeze. i may know a lot about computers, but working with videos is a completely different ball game and anyone who truly understands it is far smarter than i am.
