i'm not terribly computer literate, so I hope my question has all the pertinent information needed.

Obviously i have a virus, but my current problem started as I was going through the run and do me first instructions. I was on the remove unneeded programs step. I saw two icons on my desktop that were new since the virus started and in an attempt to get rid of all the nasties, I put them into the recycling bin because I couldn't find them as I looked through add/remove programs. I rebooted my computer and when it turned back on, I had nothing under my (the administrator's) login. No icons, no tool bars, just the pretty little background.

I've been using another login but it doesn't have admin priviledges so I'm not being allowed to do anything.

Clearly I did something wrong. Is there a way for me to fix it so I can get my administrative abilities back. I have an older Dell with windows xp. The original problem was that I hijacked and couldn't go to sites like yahoo or google without being rerouted to someone selling virus protection and warning me that I had tons of porn on my computer and that they'd clean it up. I don't know what other information is needed to answer my question, but I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Once you come to a forum like this for help and start running procedures that are requested, you should only do exactly what is requested and nothing else. I have no idea now what you moved to the Recycle Bin. You may have removed necessary files for your Windows OS.

I suggest that you boot into safe boot mode and log into the real user account that is named Administrator and use it to give administrator rights to your other user account which may help you to go further.

However, you will need to get into the user account where you deleted items and restore them from the Recycle Bin (assuming you did not already empty the Recycle Bin). You can attempt this from your blank Desktop by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to bring up Task Manager. Then click File, New Task (Run...) and enter explorer.exe into the box and click OK. Does your Desktop appear? If so, restore items you deleted.
