How do I remove a network to test and then reconnect?

I have a home network which connects the XP home PC to the win98se PC and also a xp pro laptop that comes and goes.

Now the two desktop PCs have been connected since day 1 and I have been having this really annoying slow right click/slow loading of programs when double click a file problem and I have never come across anyone who can solve it.

It isnt malware, I have done the hijack this log and a kind person on this forum has helped me through that. Ive read on the net about context menu handlers but cant seem to solve it through those suggestions.

Just today I read a forum where it is suggested it is the network causing the problem and that once you disconnect from the network it works fine.

So I would like to confirm if indeed it is the network but need to be able to reconnect it once I confirm if it isnt/is the problem and im not sure how to do that.

What would be the best way to remove the network and then get it back again?

All the internet connections are through this XP home PC.

    Thanks for any advice

Just disable the adapter, it will not loose or erase the settings, IP's WEP keys or what ever you have after you re-enable it.

When you say disable the adapter, do you mean unplug the router physically from the PC or disable it through windows somehow?

Disable it through Windows. Under network connections, right click and hit disable. The same applies to re-enable it.

YYEESS!!!! It worked, I cant explain how happy I am that I have finally discovered the cause of this problem as it has been driving me nuts for years!

under network connections I disabled '3com 3C910 integrated fast ethernet controller (3CSOHO100B-TX compatible)' which was under LAN or HIGH SPEED INTERNET and then Local area connection.

As soon as I disabled it, I could right click any icon and the properties box was there instantly, I could double click a file and the associated program would load without the 30sec delay!

It was PC heaven for me after battling this for years.

Once I reconnected it the problem cam straight back.

The connection connects the PC in another room to the router which is used for internet sharing. My next problem is to find out how to rid this delay with the connection enabled.

Any ideas to help or where to start from here?

Ok I have found a thread from a forum with people discussing similar problems, im desperate to work this out so if someone could explain what they are actually talking about in some parts of this so I can try it that would be much appreciated.

http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=30641 is the thread I found whilst googling for a solution.

    'go into any folder
    click tools->folder options
    go to the "view" tab
and uncheck the "automaticaly search for network folders and printers "
    click ok... '

I tried this with high hopes but unfortunately it hasnt worked.

A few posts towards the bottom mention using the 'netstat -a' command to look for things, I ran the command but have no idea what im looking for or what it does/means. Is there a way I can post this info and someone can walk me through any problem areas??
