My computer locked up on me with 100% CPU usage. When I rebooted it a popup came up with a windows heading of "Backweb Security Notice". Within the window is an official looking certificate supposedly published by "Consumer PC's Hewlett-packard Cupertino, California, US" as a publisher under credentials issued by "Secure Server Certification Authority RSA Data Security, Inc. US Expires : May 17, 2002"
It says that "A new certificate has arrived for channel 'HP home server'. It will be used to digitally sign the channel's contents. Do you with to accept this certificate? When I selected "NO" a warning came up saying "Declining a certificate is recommended only if you suspect it. Declining the certificate will prevent you from getting encrypted content, and signed content will not be verified. If you wish to accept the certificate click the Cancel button. Otherwise click the OK button. This is staying in the forefront of my computer. I have looked online for answers on how to remove but nothing seems to work. I need help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Many companies (including HP) use this backweb stuff to automatically download updates for their software to PCs. Most people like myself disable and delete this garbage and download updates when we want them. You will see tons of discussions on the net about Backweb and it being lumped into the malware arena due to how the software works and the problems people often have in removing it.

If you want to get automatic updates, you have to accept the certificate. Otherwise don't accept it and uninstall all the backweb software and disable it from running at startup.

Thank you so much for responding. Please forgive me as I am a beginner. I have not accepted the certificate however it appears every time I log on to the computer and it's quite a nuisance. I have run just about every spyware software there is and can't get rid of it. I'm also not sure how to diable it at startup without being able to identify it. I see an "updates from HP" listed but how do I know that is Backweb? I appreciate your help.

It may be best if you just work thru our standard cleaning procedure but let's try something easier first (not sure if it will give me what I need though).

Please run the below tool which run very quickly and attach the runkeys.txt log.

    Using GetRunKey

If you do not know how to attach files, see this: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
