Nice, if this is true then it is a whole lot easier than needing to boot to safemode to access the security tab.

Correct me if I am wrong, but all you need to do is turn off simple file sharing mode, this is the same for Pro.

but in home you CANT turn off simple file sharing... well i dont think so anyway....

Yeah as they said, Simple File Sharing is only turned off in Safe Mode for XP Home.

This could prove to be quite effective for those who can't afford the price of Pro, but want access to one of its most important features.

you can't disable it in safe mode.. you can only view the security tab in safe mode.

I always wonder about the bad press Home gets here. I had the choice, I did the full comparison, and I decided I didn't need a single damn thing Pro offered that Home didn't.

Nobody has access to my machine except me, it's not networked locally, and there's only one user. NTFS stinks for small drive complements, Fat32 shines at under 10 GB, and I've never got as much as 3 Gigs on C:; no more than 2 on D:

Doesn't suck at all. It rocks and is rock solid.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I've been running it for 12 months now without a re-install or repair.

that's becuase most of us are networked and HOME has ZERO(0) use to us because of it's inability to share both ways.

Oh. Then that must be one of the things I learned Home didn't have that Pro did, and I didn't care, since I wasn't going to hook any of my computers to any of the others.

Innnterresting. So that's what's wrong with it, eh?

I just wondered. I've never tried Pro, but I regard Home as far and away my best MS OS yet. It just always surprises me a little when somebody dumps on it, when I've found almost nothing wrong with it ... compared to all the others. I've had 3.11, 95A, B, and C, 98, 98SE, Me (don't get me started), NT, 2000, and XP Home. Home wins hands down, IMO.

Never intended to hijack a thread, so back to your local stations ...

Inability to share what both ways?

XP Home supports Peer to Peer.

That's right. Home can access a remote Pro, but Pro can't access a remote Home.
Home has "Remote Desktop Connection," but not "Remote Desktop." Pro has both. RD lets you make a computer available for remote control. Home doesn't have that ability.

When I was shopping, I looked at that and thought "why in God's name would I let someone else control MY computer? I might want to control somebody else's but not t'other way round. So that counted as points FOR Home on my shopping score card.

the remote part is ok but it's only by invite. again, this makes it useless to most of us.

I think you can download the Remote Desktop client from M$ for XP Home.

Yes, the CLIENT (MS calls it "Remote Desktop Connection" and it's a LOT like the old NT Terminal Services Client) but not the Remote Desktop, which is supported only in Pro and Server, not in Home.

Interestingly, the RDC turns out to work with some earlier versions of Windows, and it can be installed in 98, Me, and 2000 from the XP Home or Pro CD.

Oh, I see, we are talking about Remote Desktop....

and you guys talk about others not staying on subject.

Anyway, still a good tip, if it works. Even if some of you don't like Home.

XP Home, like WinME, suffers from a flawed software design model.

    A normal model goes:
    1. Requirement Spec
    2. Design
    3. Coding
    4. Testing
    5. Maintenance

But because XP Home and WinME were retro-designed from existing OS's (98SE and XP Pro), they effectively have this software model:

    1. Requirement Spec (XP Pro)
    2. Design (XP Pro)
    3. Coding (XP Pro)
    4. Testing (XP Pro)
    5. Requirement Spec (XP Home)
    6. Coding (XP Home)
    7. Testing (XP Home)
    8. Maintenance (XP Home)

And you can imagine how little time MS spent on step 7, when XP Home was not intended for Corporate use. And step 6 involved pretty much adding or ripping out certain elements wholly.

This is actually the cycle all software goes through after it has been in maintenance stage for some time. It's like deciding halfway through that the new Honda Accord doesn't really need that fourth wheel, and not going back to the drawing board.

98 and 98SE sort of have this "grandfathered OS" issue from Win 95, but since 98 and 98SE added so little and were tested very rigorously, they don't have a problem. i.e.,

    Interesting breakdown.

Sure am glad that my thread regarding a potential tweak wasn't hijacked and wasted.....

I have networked Home and Pro peer to peer all day long.

    Its doable :)

If you have an issue with it, get your own thread, we can discuss at lengths ;)

Does ANYBODY care enough about the various detours here to start a new thread on one of them?

I don't. And the hijacking of this one was done before I got in.
