How do I turn off dhcp on a 2nd router behind another router

I read several (~10) threads related to this problem, and unfortunately everyone seems to know more about how to set this up than I do. I'm still confused, and cannot get anything to work.

I just installed DSL today with a D-link ADSL2/2+ Modem with 4-port ethernet router combo. Behind that, I have an older linksys wireless-G WRT54G.

I'd like to have the linksys get internet signal (wired) from the D-link modem and broadcast internet for my wireless laptop.
My computer can pick up a "wireless" signal, but I cannot access the internet with it.

Current setup: phone line goes into the D-link modem then out of the modem:
LAN 1 ethernet to desktop computer
LAN 2 to ethernet to an ethernet over power which goes to an xbox 360
LAN 3 to linksys wireless router

My questions are: How should I have the linksys connected to the d-link? I've read LAN to LAN as oppoosed to LAN to "Internet". Also, How can I access the linksys router to turn off dhcp (I don't know what that is, or means, but I read in several threads that I need to do that.) When I type in 192.168.1.1 I am directed to the D-link's admin screen.

I tried connecting the linksys directly to my laptop and going to 192.168.1.1, but it did not work.

How can I get around the D-link and log into the linksys to change it's settings?

I wish I knew a better way to explain what is wrong.

So, I'm not sure how I did it, but using my desktop computer, I decided to go to http://192.168.1.1 and when I did, the username was blank but there was a password in the password field. I clicked ok and it took me to the linksys router's page.
There I turned off dhcp, and changed the ip address to 192.168.1.2 and I'm now posting this from me laptop via my wireless connection.

Sorry to have cluttered up the thread with this nonsense.
