I can't remember how to get to the place in Windows XP where you can turn off the programs that automatically start at startup (without having to go into safe mode.)

I'm using a recording program, ProTools, and just recently, my CPU spikes up and won't go back down when I use a reverb plug in. Never used to do that. Seems like something is running in the background, but Security Task Manager doesn't show it. I have no spyware because I have armed myself with the gamut of downloads from this site, plus I have Norton.

Anyone know anything about how CPU spikes? What typically causes this? When the spike happens, the session won't playback. Tried increasing the buffer, doesn't help.

    Thanks,

    Brant

Click start-run-type in msconfig, and hit enter. then go to the tab at the top that says Start Up. Be sure you know what your getting rid of though.

if you use advanced settings in spybot there is a safer way than msconfig

tools>startup items ... then just uncheck what you don't want

I can't vouch for Spybot, but msconfig relocates those registry entries for startup, so if you uninstall said program, it leaves registry entries behind.
