    I know what you mean
    win xp here
    trying to help my sons friend over the net
    he is 30 miles away
    and it always helps to have it in front of you when working on it

    Start/Settings/Control Panel then open the Multimedia control panel and select the Audio tab (if not selected already) then check "Show volume control on the taskbar".
