How do unchecked startup items (msconfig) affect Hijack This and Spyware Programs?

I am trying to cleanup my niece's computer. I have performed all of the steps per:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

I think things are in pretty good shape and want to post a "Hijack This" log as a final check. What I'm not sure about is that I turned off virtually all startup items via msconfig (Win98) before I ran any of the spyware checks\programs.

Will that have affected the results of the spyware programs? Will that affect the "Hijack This" log?

I think that there are still bad entries in the msconfig list (unchecked), meaning there are at least some traces in the registry.

What should I do next? Thanks.

You need to run msconfig and select Normal Startup. We cannot clean what we cannot see. You must allow all items to load.

If you have completed all the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal and you still have problems, follow the steps below.

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

You should goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below:
    WeatherBug
    Bearshare

Both put other malware onto your PC (unless Bearshare is the paid version).
    See this: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\EARA.EXE

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".

Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FTYWGJX.DLL
    C:\HDNET.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\vivvnz.exe <--- this will come back. We'll address that later.
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINUP2DATE.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\348legmm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dqt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\EARA.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vxzcj.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\AWS <--- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Re: How do unchecked startup items (msconfig) affect Hijack This and Spyware Programs

Steps Done. Things look good. Bearshare was hard to get rid of. I hope it's all gone.

Of the files mentioned in the advice, below, only the two I *, were there to be deleted. (Files were not hidden). Does that make sense?

"Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to
    delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FTYWGJX.DLL
    C:\HDNET.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\vivvnz.exe <--- this will come
    back. We'll address that later.
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINUP2DATE.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\348legmm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dqt.exe
    * C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\EARA.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vxzcj.exe
    * C:\PROGRAM FILES\AWS <--- the whole folder"

Also, I rebooted after running the new Hijack This log, and two strange items appeared briefly in the Task List: "Lucomserver _2_6" and "mmdiag". They disappeared after about a minute. I don't remember seeing them before. [I have done virtually nothing other than the prescribed steps on this machine since my last post.]

Attached is the new Hijack This log. Thanks, again.
