got a freebee computer that was once used in a network. Has window xp.
modem problem is this: the modem that is in there is on com#4. xp, wizard, and "add new hardward" does not recongize com 4. How do I change the modem to com1?
Note: please remember, I am a newbee, "majorgeek" so keep it simple.
    thanks,
    The Gypsy Agent.

    Try this....

Click Start; Control panel; System. Click on hardware tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button. Find your modem, right-click and choose "properties". Choose the "Advanced" tab, and click the "Advanced port settings" button. You'll see where to change it at the bottom left.

    Hello King Edward,
    ok,did the above.here is what I found.Under Modems came 3 listings.(1)Lt win modem with !.(2)standard 56000bps modem(3)usrobtics56k fax win2.
    when I hit the properties tab on #1 &#2 I got"working properly but no"Advanced
tab. ON the usrobtics I get working properly and Advanced tab. when I go into advance tab and try to change the com4 to com1,2,3 it says they are all in use.
when I hit the default button on upper right to shoots back to com4.

Now, should I delete modems 1 & 2...leaving US robotics as the only modem?
then try to change the com back to ????(what) since they are currently in use by something. Now, if I do try to put it in com 1,2,3, the tab comes up that I could have a conflict with whatever is using that com. So, what would you suggest.

Crack the case of the PC and find out what brand of modem is in there. Also run Everest and it will probe the devices to tell you what is there. Also System Information Tool 'msinfo32' comes with Windows 95,98,me,nt,2k,XP and is already on the system or should be, and will tell you what installed devices.

The LT win modem with the "!" is more than likely the modem that's installed if the computer is a name-brand like compaq, HP, ect.. If I had to guess, the US Robotics modem may have been an external modem that used to be connected to the computer. The standard 56000 modem was more than likely an"add hardware" mistake. If it were my computer, I'd remove all three modems from device manager, and then re-start the computer. XP should pick up the modem as new hardware and install the drivers for it. Good luck. (P.S. If it is a win modem, it will use com 3 more than likely)
