You could try pressing F12 to select a boot device, then it should show a selection between hard drive and cd drive. Thats how it is on mine. If not you'll have to enter bios and set the cd drive as the first thing to boot, It should be under Advanced bios settings. Just tell me if you need more help.

That is usually sufficient- but , if it skips past the cd. then.........
Usually you press f2 when starting up to get into the bios screen- (if you google "bios screen ", you will see many pictures showing a typical bios screen)
This screen is basically just writing, and to get it to boot from cd, you would normally look for "boot " option , that is often just a tab at the top of the screen.
When you find the options in the bios, it is often detailed down one side, to move the boot from disc, or dvd up, or, down, by either the actual up/down button on the keyboard, when you have highlighted dvd/hard drive, or, pressing the enter key, and then using up/down buttons, sometimes even the spacebar.
Once you have changed ir, then you will save and exit(sometimes pressing f10 while in the bios, a box comes up asking to save, and exit, in which case , pressing the "y" button, or, enter while it is highlighting the yes on the box-

seems simple enough for my friend to understand, it hard because i have no physical access to the machine and she isn't very tech savy. i never touched an emachine before i hear that they aren't that good of a system anyway

thanks for all the help, i'll post again if i was wrong about the bios interface and/or model

On my eMachine purchased in Oct. '09, pressing F12 gives me the boot menu to boot from the CD/DVD drive. Pressing del gets me into the BIOS; but on my model, I do not need to go into the BIOS to change the boot order.
Find out the model so we know exactly what keys; these are not standard from model to model. The model is probably on a sticker on the side of the computer.

does the picture i provided narrow down the search of what model it is (i don't think my friend knows how to tell what model it is and i can't go over there to look for her) the reason why i can't go over is a long story
