How does this happen?

    How is it that a forum's admin can recognise me when I am using a different IP address given that I never logged in under that IP.

    Because they did and I'm not sure how it happened.

    Any ideas would be most appreciated.

    Sometimes it is just posting style. What did you do? Were you banned from a site and then tried logging in with a new user name and different IP address?

    Yes I was banned unfairly, it was political, seriously I did nothing wrong except dare to disagree with a mod's perspective on something. I want to get back in contact with a member there, I don't have any other way to contact them.

    It cannot be posting style, they refused to even let me set up an account:(

    However even though it was a different IP, it was the same laptop I used.

    S.O.L. = :crap out of luck. They probably banned the entire IP block, as in anyone coming from your ISP.

    Most sites have a definite rule about coming back under another name after you've been banned, also, so I'd have to agree with TimW. If you really need to get in touch with someone, try sending a message to another admin to see if you can do something to fix it.

    I would have thought being an admin youself you of all people would know; trade secrets eh?

    The ISP is different. And it's in another city.

    They recognised me some other way and part of what concerns me about this, is that if they were able to do that what else do they know. Do they know what other sites I visits, my facebook etc. ?

    This mod is tyrannical, he himself has admitted he is disordered - I just want my contact and then I want out. I know he will not help me there is no point asking.

    Sites with forums rarely "trade secrets". I don't even have a clue as to what site you were banned from. Plus I have no idea how they would have known it was you if you were using a completely different IP address in a different city. The only other way they might know anything about you is if you told them in any posts. I can see your IP address easily, but it doesn't tell me who you are or exactly where you are other than in Sheffield.

    Unless you signed up with the same email address.

    By trade secrets I meant you are in the same kind of business/"trade" (admin on a forum) not literally trading secrets.

    Could it be cookies then? I had the password/usernames saved on the laptop, it used to autofill after typing the first letter.

    I am amatureish in the ways of the internet and so on, perhaps this is a obvious error?

    I don't know what all they may track. It could be cookies, but it could be something else. If you want to just make contact with someone, the only way to do so is to have someone else do it for you. ;)

    Go to an internet cafe or a friends house.If an IP is pinged the number of hops and their location can allow your general location to be tracked.

    My apologies I didn't see that you mentioned the IP being in another city.

    With a different provider?If its the same provider and you've only moved one city away then it will pretty obviously be you.

    Hi! I've been there and done that. It's really sad when you have friends that you can't contact any longer. This is a very friendly forum that allows this kind of discussion. Most forums would delete this thread. My advise would be to delete all book marks, favorites, cookies. Wait a month ; then try registering with a different email, IP address, user name, and don't use the same password. If you get lucky, you might be able to stay long enough to get your friends email address. It doesn't sound like you want to be a member any longer, so have a friend register and get your friend's email would be what I would advise. Forums have a way of keeping you off. I just received a email from a forum that banned me a long time ago. They look at a block of IP"S; if your in that block, they can narrow it down pretty fast.They look for any new people in that block; that's why I say wait a while To quote Tim, your probably SOL. I hope I haven't broken forum rules. I've been watching this thread for awhile and decided it must be ok to reply. Good luck and I hope you find away to contact your friend!!:(:wave

    Trade secrets no, but Admins have tricks and routes to trace and ID a user, many admins have different tricks and mine maybe different to users, but sadly I'm not going to openly tell my tips and tricks in public as it just nulls and voids how I will spot potential troublemakers.

    How, please enlighten?

    Cookies dont give enough info as to the user location, IP and much else that the admin panel of a forum can give and the IP address, email and user name gives more.

    OS well with millions of say Windows XP users that as shot in the dark to ID a specific user via OS alone or at all.

    not that i think some hacker wud tap into it...no, it's more a matter of me in my idiocy somehow putting UP the stream somehow...somewhere....
