There's four in between your question and this reply...

Not on my screen MrP. I see the "Sponsored Links" bar, but it's blank. And the Banner ads and side ads on the main page seem to be missing tonight. Could be they're working on it at the moment.

But the amount of ads here is never overwhelming. One, Tim and Jim don't like that kind of tacky, and two, the main download area is a HUGE site, with many thousands of hits per day, so they don't have to have wall-to-wall ads to meet their bills.

I got them, but it's three now. I'm not complaining, just wondering why jerseydevil didn't see them

Maybe an ad-blocker? Dunno. All the ads are back for me now too, so I assume the boys were just working on things. (shrug)

How does the HUGE download area raise revenue? I would think that software writers pay to list their software.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

notice at the top of some sections, there are paid ads with downloads, I always refer people here when they need a program or tech support.

    OK on the main site:
    Homepage:
One large horiztontal banner above the fold, in the center of vision. That'll be an expensive spot.
Large vertical banner on the right hand sidebar, just below the fold.
One smaller vertical ad on the left hand sidebar below the "feeds" section.

    Download pages:
An extra inline google ad line between the header section and the description, and in the description a boxed out google ad box. And at the bottom another google ad banner.

I don't see how that is "no ads".

As for software writers paying to list software, I don't think that happens. I believe that [T|J]im looks at the submissions, tests them and if they're good enough simply adds them to the site. I don't know for sure though.

    [T|J]im -- I like that. That really describes us to a T. :)

GF is correct MG is 100% ad supported. We do NOT accept payment from authors so they can be listed... We do have ads from authors who are already listed and want more exposure, but it is mutually exclusive.

What about all the book and movie deals from your radio show? :)

Yeah -- those are in the works, we just cant decide who would play me. I want someone like Charlie Sheen. The producers want that punky kid from the Jimmy Kimmel show.

Tim will clearly be played by David Hasselhoff.

Jims ringtone when he calls me is the Knight Rider theme ;)

To expand, since Jim wont toot his own horn... When we first started, those who were here remember, popups were everywhere on most websites. We ran 3 per person per day. As we started to finally pay the bills and pocket a few bucks, we cut them down until gone as soon as possible, of course taking money out of our own pockets. All ads are intentionally subtle as possible. We want you to click them, but were not going to put it in your face, nor run half naked woman or crappy programs for ads. We will never apologize for making money, we work at this 7 days a week, we take no days off and work on vacation. This is our 2 full time jobs and we love it... most days. Of course, people like to guess what we make, what they dont consider is our expenses. I think at last count we have 8 dedicated servers running, plus a handful of other expenses. Also, when we started this, the dot com era was over, and we were both dead broke starting this up after the first year and were prepping our resumes. No kidding! As you can see, we dont go out of our way to obscenely profit from this venture. It would be nice to have my own airplane, but I never had much interest in being a rich snob.

This sounds all warm and fuzzy, but in reality, it is Jim spending about 4-5 hours a day (if not more) negotiating for quality ads and rejecting ads that dont fit.

But, we want to do it while keeping a tasteful site and I think the thread shows we have accomplished that. Appreciate it.

Yes very much so the .COM boom was well and truely burst when you started up again, hence the amount of large websites that went bust or ceased to exist and taking the leap of faith and no doubt personal expense to start a new large venture up was and you'd most like both agree a massive gamble, BUT one i'm please to say has paid off and if both you and Jim are now starting to make a few bucks off it to enjoy some of the pleasures of live, without the stresses of knowing were your next bill is going to be paid from then for one I have a really beaming smile and a big congratulations for working so hard to make this work :)

If you show off the occasional new toy for one It would never give me any reason to be negative as I know you guys have worked and work damm hard to get these unlike the ones who do the moaning who just want these things on a plate, sadly lifes not that easy... the onus is on the individual to make sucess their way.

    Congrats guys :)

I (we?) do appreciate it. It's a nice place to visit casually, and a nice place to hang around. Not only for the lack of garish ads, but for your sense of humor. The artwork, jokes, etc. This is a serious venture, but you guys obviously don't take yourselves too seriously. Makes for a nice atmosphere.

You guy's deserve any amount of money this website brings you. It is alot of stress, trial and error, hard work and sacrifice to take an idea and turn it into something you can take pride in.

All of us have ideas (I have a bunch:eek: ), but to take that idea and make it a profitable business is a difficult task. So much can go wrong and usually does, every decision in the beginning might mean the success or failure of the venture......you are still not sure about.

I would think that you guy's have already ran into a couple of difficult choices, and more to come, that might net you more money but would make major changes to the site that you are not comfortable with, for whatever reason.

I like this place. I'm happy your hard work is finally paying off. Like it should. :)

Good luck in the future fella's.

MajorGeeks is so famous now, it was even mentioned (can't remember the exact month) in one of the Aussie mags I read, PC Authority.

Being a member, I almost feel like a celebrity. :)

Love MG, thoroughly addicted. One thing you might want to update are your copyright © dates. Some of them show 2004, etc. Bazza

I almost never see any ads on MG either (or most of the other sites I visit). I use a custom hosts file that short-circuits most ad links and the pop-up blocker in Mozilla or Opera takes care of the rest.
