How exactly does spyware work? (In Detail)

    I am a student who is currently studying spyware for a project. I have been having troubles with one particular question: I know that spyware can track the infected computer's activities, but how does it do it? Is there someone constantly on a computer looking at what their 'victims' do? Does it send alerts to them?
    Moreover, how does spyware get into a computer in the first place?
    Hopefully, my wording has been understanderble and you can resolve my problems.

    Hey. Apparently, Google ain't my friend. I've been looking for months for this info, but I can't seem to find any. So I came here to hopefully learn stuff from the experts. ;)
