the kind that is wired inside the walls. my friend said he would pay me $100 to install it, because the "professional installation" guy's quote for installing it was $1000. i already know how to hook up all the cables, and the problems of wiring it throughout the walls and ceiling (its going to be a 5.1 setup, so all i would need to wire in the walls would be the rear left + right, and the front left + right) are virtually gone because the room that the system is going to be installed in is largely unfinished, there is no ceiling (exposed rafters and piping, a drop ceiling will likely be installed later) and i can access directly behind both the left and right walls adjacent to the tv.

SO, all that being said, what else is there to setting up a surround sound system? how hard is it, really?

If you aren't going to be fishing the wires through the walls and such it is definitely not a $1000 job. I can't believe someone could even give that quote with a straight face.

One thing they could have been offering though are the very high end cables...which on a total hookup could get you into the hundreds. Is your friend going to have the cables there for you? If not, you should charge your fee + cost of materials (keep receipts).

Other than that, if you know how to do it, it's pretty straight forward. I didn't look at DomLuc's links, but I would think they talk about placement of the speakers in the room, so check things like that out also.

depends on what kind of 5.1 system you are talking about.

$1000 could have been for all the brackets and what not too.

it does seem a bit high, but with out seeing the bid, I couldn't tell you for sure.

yeah, i think that the person made the estimate without seeing the actual space where it would be installed, as the room where it would be setup has no ceiling and one whole wall, so the cost of labor for getting behind all the walls and inside the ceiling would not exist.

so what i might do is to tell my friend to get the person who would install the system over to their house and get a better price estimate.
