How is this legal? (if it is)

I usually look up the phone numbers I don't recognize of those who call me just to see who they are. I've been doing this for years and I have never come across something like this. Usually I'll get the websites with other people's comments, who have gotten calls from this number, and say if the number is a scammer, telemarketer, or bill collector. Helps me to know.

So, I looked up a number today and I clicked on this website xdd (dot) org (I don't advise going here but venture at your own risk, this place is creepy to me and I don't know how safe.)

It lists the person's name, address, phone number, SSN, DL# number, CC# (s), and D.O.B. At first, I was like OMG?!? what kind of creepy place did I wander into?? but then I noticed in the background that it said "FAKE" and I was like :confused. Behind the google map directions/image of the address it says:

Then if I couldn't get possible anymore confused. I notice a little "click here for FAQ", so I clicked on it. More creepiness.

How exactly did he "legally obtain" all this info?? and then the question is, is it real or is it fake?? it says it's fake data but then the FAQ says it's real data just scrambled around?? How can this be remotely legal if any bit of it is true?

I'm completely confused and creeped out by this website. I wasn't sure if I should report this to someone? or....am I over reacting and this is harmless?

This is why I bring this info to everyone here. Help me with all of your smarticles (LOL), what do you think of this?

Anything can be found on the Internet. I have found out similar information about others, and myself. As long as they are not breaking into any private servers for the info, then it is legal for them to have it. The illegal part is how it leaked in the first place.

I recently had someone attack me. I was involved in some rather nasty Android community drama when my team and I left xda-developers.com. We left and helped flesh out a site called rootzwiki.com. As retribution, we were DDOSed for about a week straight, and my email address was compromised. Someone took it, signed me up to at least 200 different subscriptions. I was receiving in the upwards (and it still happens to this date, I just have around 50 filters set), of 1500 spam emails, including billing statements for something I didn't order.

It didn't stop there, either. I received PACKAGES on my doorstep. Packages! Medical catalogs, magazines, MORE billing statements. It is still happening today, although I have moved since and the packages don't come to me, but the other residents of where I was staying.

So I did some research, and sure enough, my information was on spokeo.com. Who knows how. However, I have changed a lot of my habits since then and my information ha become hard to find once again.

What's sad is where a lot of this data comes from.

In Texas (and possibly other states), the Dept. of Motor Vehicles whores out the name and address of everyone who has a TX drivers' license and/or car registration.

Every Honda car dealer is Houston knows I own a 2002 Accord; I get at least two letters a week to the effect of "WE NEED YOUR TRADE NOW!" or "10% OFF SERVICE ON YOUR 2002 ACCORD!".

I also have a motorcycle endorsement on my license. Although I haven't owned one in about 6 years, I get regular catalogs from motorcycle accessory shops and letters from GEICO about saving 15% or more on my motorcycle insurance.

Not only is this annoying junk mail (snail spam?), it also makes my home address public record. I checked spokeo; my name pops up a map of the exact block of the street I live on.

My DMV info is nobody's business. There should be an opt-out on sharing this, similar to the FTC's "Do Not Call" list.

That website, Spokeo, is highly suspect to me.

They say they use; real estate records (I don't own a house), phone books (way before my time and I wouldn't let myself be in one anyway), Social Networks (the only thing I use is Facebook, and I don't even use my real name, age, list my address/zip code or even belong to any "networks"), Marketing Surveys (nope, I don't have time for those), and online maps (I don't share ANY info, so that's irrelevant), yet they have ALL my personal information for all places I lived for the past 10 years.

I am extremely private when it comes to online stuff. My sister makes fun of me all the time because I don't have one bit of personal info (that isn't made up) on my fb page. Any other time I've Googled myself, I came up with nothing, as it should be. At least they give you an option to delete these listings, I'm gonna make sure I follow up and see if they actually did it.

Ok, so now I'm pissed. :-D

I didn't even know that was your mission! :p

I should go buy a pair of shoes to make myself feel better... :-D

I've only been "attacked" once, but whoever it was REALLY knew their stuff. I was pretty shocked at what all they could hack since I'm really a "nobody" and don't have real $$ to speak of. Still wonder why I was targeted......

I know why I was targeted. My departure from the mentioned forum cost some folks money, esepcially when other development teams followed us. I have no less than 45!!! email rules to keep my email account empty of enough spam to use it.
45 email rules, each with 2-3 rules in each.

The person I suspect of doing it?

I have a lot of info on.

    Name
    Address
    Job
    Military rank
    Pay grade
    Stationed military base

Nothing is private on the Internet. NOTHING.

See I don't expect there not to be data about me on the internet but I expect there not to be PUBLIC data. I'm very conscientious about what *I* publicly put online. Which is why, with the handful of sites I frequent or any email addresses, I usually give a fake name, DOB, zip code (if they ask). So the fact that the place had all my correct, personal information and to say they got it from public sources? Impossible.

Oh and Adry, I did go out after work and buy shoes... and socks.... and leggings! I hope you can sleep with that on your conscience tonight :p LOL

These aren't the ones I bought but I thought how great of a weapon they would make :-D

Those look painful to walk in....

I will never understand women. ;)

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Oh, I could never walk in those. With my lack of balance/coordination I would certainly just fall right over! :-D

I just think if you were in a fight, these shoes would totally be a plus. ;)

Assuming you could balance on one stiletto at a time!

  14. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

No balancing necessary. You take them both off and you either throw both of them, or throw one and start hitting with the other. :-D

I think a gun strapped to a leg is more effective (and sexier :p).

  16. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Yea, sure but by the time you reach under your skirt to get your gun from your holster, you could:

    A) get knocked off balance by the other person because you still have those monster shoes on.
    B) Knock yourself over in your haste to get your gun and lose your balance because you still have those monster shoes on.
    C) Get knocked up side the head with a pipe, bat or even someone else shoe while reaching.

It would take less than a second to whip those shoes off, making them much more effective, IMO. ;)
