I was fiddling with one of my computers the other day ( putting new hardware/arranging cables).

Well long story short i reconnect everything ( or so i thought) and try to power on the computer. My computer would try to turn on for a brief second and shut off, so i pressed the power button 2 more times.

The 2nd time it shut off again in 1 second but by the 3rd time i heard a very minor static sound so i quickly flicked the switch on the back to turn off the power.

I then open up my case again and see what may be wrong and well stupid me forgot to re connect the molex cable to the motherboard which is why the computer was not turning on properly..

Anyways i connect the molex cable and everything is running smoothly right now but i am being a really paranoid about the blue led light on the front panel by the power button. The light flashes often ( like every other second) but i am quite sure this is just activity from the hard drive(s) , because when i put the pc to sleep it stops flashing but just blinks ( blinking is normally when pc is sleeping).

I went and looked at all my other pcs and it seems all of them blink but the one i worked on recently seems to blink a bit more. I am probably a little paranoid because of the small static sound i heard but better safe then sorry.

my light is blinking similar to this video but a little faster

The only light that should blink when the PC is on and running normally is the hard drive activity light. The amount it blinks is related to when the PC is reading or writing data from/to the drive.

If it stays on constantly when you aren't running anything on the PC, it likely indicates the drive is running more than needed due to one or more of the following:

    • Too many background programs running at once. Go into MSCONFIG and see what programs are running at startup. If thinks like Skype, Nero, etc. are loading automatically, disable them so they only run when you need them. If you don't know what a program is, it's best not to disable it.
    • Your drive is fragmented. Download and run Smart Defrag to check and fix this.
    • If the PC seems unusually slow or freezes randomly, you should do a long DST (drive self test) to verify it's not failing. Download and run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard. It works on all brands of hard drives.
    • You may not have enough memory in your PC. The hard drive sometimes acts as virtual memory; this can cause it to run constantly. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, choose task manager and click on the Performance tab. If your memory usage averages over 70% adding more memory is a good idea.
    Hope this helps.
