I am a working guy who just happens to have more than a passing interest in computers. For as long as I can remember I have been doing computer repair "on the side" for friends and family and for the most part was doing it either probono (small stuff) or for a "donation" at the end (bigger stuff). I have also done some off and on work for some friends of family and the donation route has done well. Last time I did some work for them I installed log me in clients on all their machines because I knew malware would always be an issue for them.

I got a call today requesting service on one of the computers to remove a "insert credit card to be virus-free" bug. I am going to do a few sweeps and then make sure windows and avg are updated.

So what would you charge for this? Last time they brought a machine to me for the same thing they gave me $100. I have no idea how much to ask for or agree to. What do you think??

    HI

While this forums malware area does it for FREE, I know that out in the community its dfferent so for me if you can easily get rid of this malware yourself and completly then if family or friend then I would leave it to them to offer you something, I never ask friends or family for anything at all, as I'm happy to help, but if someone I dont know then depending on the job I would be wanting at least £50 ($100) for an hours work.

Its very rare I do anything for cash tho, most of my work is free in person or free on this forum, take pleasure from helping folk and if they wish to offer me something then fine, if its not over the top and say a few $1000 then I will gladly take it if they are happy, but once you take cash you will get more calls from same users as they now think you are their personal tech.

Whenever I asked my ISP for help, they always helped me (back when I was green as grass LOL!) I paid them, and took them fresh doughnuts from the doughnut shop... They LOVED it when I came in.... Kinda hard to insert a doughnut in the USB port here tho....LOL
