    how old where you
when you started to feel "old"
    if at all
certain events in life have that effect on people
    what was yours?
    if any
and did it make you feel "useless"?

Can't say I feel old, because I am as immature as 17 year olds get.. But...

Felt older... most olderest? Whatever i'm trying to say.. was when i got given responsibilty of a godson, and babysat a tiny baby for a whole day and i realised i was growing up and how scary the real world actually is.

I felt old while I was pregnant with Drexel. I was sore, fat and felt really ugly. I felt like I was in constant "Mom" mode and didn't have much of an identity outside that. Didn't have much to do with age, but more to do with my attitude. Got back in shape after Drexel was born, grew my hair back out and started working on pursuing other interests to make myself a more rounded person. (Made me a better Mom too). I still find myself slipping back occasionally, but I catch it before it gets to bad.

Am still growing up at 65, but when you write messages to cute young things like AbbySue and try to box Kodo's ears (not easy - he's shifty) you realize just how old you really are. The sad thing to have to realize and live with, is that I'm not as sexy as I used to think I was. I really HAVE turned into the dirty old man I used to proudly proclaim I was.

I don't FEEL old, although I know my body doesn't bounce back like it used to, after a late night party or a strenuous round of golf, etc.

Some of the terrible world events have made me feel REAL old.

Now I just do it one day at a time, and enjoy each new day as a challenge.

I still try to learn something new every day. And I try to make a new friend as often as I can.

Wow jarcher...that set off some weird and interesting thought processes in my head :)

I'm not sure about feeling old, but I know I felt tired, exhausted and done in by life by the time I hit 13. Conversely, now I'm hitting 40, I now feel more like the little girl is inside me than ever it was, now that I truly should be exhausted by life :D

Life events.....well...plenty of reality checks, but I guess now I realise life is just one big test, and whether I pass them or not it doesn't matter, as long as I am learning from my past mistakes.

I typically feel old toward the end of a 14 or more hour workday. ;)

Other than that...mostly it's when kids who in my mind are still children are doing things like driving, going to college, getting married, etc.

Do you ever look in the mirror and just stare really deeply into your own eyes? You see a little girl looking out...scares me sometimes! (scares me even more is you say "yes" to that and you're a guy ;) )

I guess i stsrted to feel old somewhere around my 30's.

I didn't have the "useless" feeling, it was more of a "lost" feeling like where the hell am i going and what the hell am i doing.

    Still feel that way sometimes.

The first time I really felt old was when my little sister graduated high school. I was only 21 at the time.

Oh yeah, and when I turned thirty.

As far as feeling useless, well, my wife tells me that I am all the time :p

Well I guess three years ago (36) when my wife passed away was when I started to feel very old...

Something like that knocks your whole self perception and the ability to give a damn about anything right down the drain...

My Great uncle Paul (79) asked me how old I was at the last family reunion I attended year before last, and I told him:" 83 years old." he got a wry smile on his face, and nodding his head said he understood...

We're hanging in there though, and I'm very happy for everyday I get to see and talk to folks. It just seems like I appreciate them all the more these days...

Being told you have incurable cancer tends to make you feel old, but hurting all over definitely makes you feel both old and semi-useless. Luckily the hurting comes and goes. Some days I'm younger than others. ;)

@ lb4norlean: What laurieB said. It comes back slowly and gradually, but it comes back. Hang in there.

I never started to think I was old until the last two years.
I have 15 yo twin daughters one of whom is fine the other has Spastic Ceribral Palsey *quadraplegic*, that should speek for its self.
And a 19 yo son that has had Ulcers burn two holes in his stomach and nearly die from the result. after the surgery he never felt good and lost every ounce of body fat and much muscle mass.
The Doctors at one time gave him 6 month to live. After months and Hospitals and many bad Diagnosis he was finally diagnosed with severed nerves in his abdomin from a his surgery. The cut nerves caused him to not be able to eat, breath deeply, sigh, bend in any way, sit, stand. for the most part do any thing we all take for granted.
Things have now gotten much better now and he still has bouts of pain but not like he did.

Lastly and most importantly what has made me feel so old is that I have an ex-wife that is the sister of Satin!

What a thinker this thread is.
    I was always 18.
Have been that for 33 years.
I have worked since I was 10 years old.
In the last 18 mths. I have lost:
    job
    car
    health
wife ( there were a few good things that happened lol ).
    Everything I have worked for.
I am on disability and hating it.
I have always worked for what I have.
    NOW.
    Single
    Have a great gsd.
Way too much time to spend and nothing to do with it ( I dont drive, makes things safer)
hospital a few times a month average
doctors a few times a week average
things are gettting better but i feel useless
asked to go back to school and they told me i was stupid
they think i will lose too much money
    could go on and on
but i have learned one thing
THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE WITH MORE PROBLEMS THAN ME
make the best of what you have, time is not renewable for anyone
old age is a state of mind.
    imho.

I've tried so hard not to answer seriously to this thread based on my last 2 weeks of life. I feel about 450 years old...each day I put on 10 years. I'm not coping with some stuff too well and would appreciate prayers. Thank you.

I'm sorry lev. I'll be saying some for you.
Mine is also being tested at this time. As I type this, my friend's 25 year old son is going by ambulance to Minneapolis to have a 2 1/2 inch tumor operated on. They are hoping they can remove it. He had flu like symptoms for a couple of weeks with headaches and dizziness.

sometimes life just isn't fair. Especially lately.
