I'm not clear about what you are trying to do. You created a disk image of the your system drive from a computer running XP and now you want to write that image to a system running Windows 8.1?

You can't do that without wiping out Windows 8.1 along with everything else on the drive. A disk image is a byte for byte copy of a drive that you use to overwrite everything on the drive you are writing it to. So doing the above will result in you having XP installed rather than Win8. Depending on which program you used to create the disk image, you may be able to selectively copy files and folders from the disk image to the drive containing Win8. I think perhaps that's what you want to do. Some disk imaging program like Acronis TrueImage allows one to mount an image in Windows as though it were a drive, thereby allowing users to copy files from the mounted image to the system drive. But in that case you would need the imaging program installed on the Win8 system.

Unless of course you have a boot disk containing the program that created the disk image. Then you might be able to selectively copy files from the image on CD/DVD to your Win8 system disk during boot up. However, not all disk imaging programs allow for this.

What program did you use to create the disk image and where do you have the image stored? Let's start with that.

you can also save your image onto and external hard drive using Clonezilla or DRBL server. Then build your Windows 8 machine, boot your virtual machine from your Clonezilla cd and clone XP onto your virtual machine.
