How restore USB ports?

I'm using Windows XP Pro with a P4 processor and have lost the use of my USB Ports. To date, I've:

    1. Unplugged and replugged USB devices
    2. With Device Manager, I've uninstalled the devices listed under USB Controllers and restarted the computer
    3. After restarting the computer, the USB devices appeared again and I used Device Manager to "Update Drivers."

Currently, I have a scanner and UPS connected via USB. Both have worked fine for several years.

Any suggestions on what I should try next?

    Thanks.

Turn off the computer and pull the power plug out of the outlet/mains. Let the power cord off the electric source for at least 1/2 hour. Then plug the power cord back in and fire up the computer.
I know, it sounds weird and you think I may be telling you something ridiculous but the fact is, this has restored USB ports for others so it is worth trying.
