I uninstalled IE8 because of lagging issues. IE7 worked fine until Windows recommended updates. I choose what I needed, opting out of the IE8 update. The updates messed me up big time. My IE7 now said 'no add-ons'. I tried a System Restore which took me back to IE8 and that has 'no-add-ons'. I tried uninstalling it again and couldn't because a file was missing so I installed it over itself and for now its staying since IE7 had the same issue. Windows had a 'fix' pertaining to a bad icon download, and although the issue was before I installed any IE I tried it and nothing. I found an IE Fix-it tool in here and tried that, still nothing. Anyone know how I can get my regular settings back? Running XP and IE8 for now. Thanx.

    Cannot disable 'no-addons' in IE8-XP

After uninstalling IE8 I was notified by Windows that updates were available, so I chose what I needed [opting out of IE8] and the updates really messed me up. I did a System Restore which must have put IE8 back cause its here again. I tired to uninstall it but now files are missing. I installed it again over itself to get the files and they're still missing.

I guess I could live with IE8, but somehow the 'no-addons' feature was enabled, meaning I have no toolbar with options, can't allow pop-ups or downloads.

I scanned with Malwarebytes and Avast and nothing. Windows claims this may be due to a bad icon download so I reinstalled IE8 again and still the same thing. Any ideas on how to get this resolved? Thanx

FYI, I also tried 'Last known good configuration' to no avail.

In Vista type into start "regedit" (without the quotes) enter
In Xp type into run "regedit" (without the quotes" enter

    Then search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\CommandBar
In the right pane, right click CommandBarEnabled and click on Modify
In the edit DWORD value window where it says Value Data
Type 0 to turn it off click OK or :
Type 1 to turn it on click OK

    See if that helps

    Thanks Rusty ! :)

I tried the Windows method earlier and because I don't have a toolbar I can't click on 'tols' and go through that.
Trying rustyjacks method, I got as far as right clicking on CommandBar and there is no CommandBarenabled entry in the right hand panel. Theres {Default],Compatibility and FavBandRow. Am I missing something here? Sorry if I am.

You can try this. Uninstall IE8, then reinstall and choose custom installation. You will be taken through a menu of options, decline or say no to EVERYTHING. Don't accept a single feature/accelerator/filter..etc.
I've done lots of IE8 installs this way and I have had zero problems whereas I have seen a lot of problems with the "full" IE8 installs.

I can't uninstall IE8 because a bunch of files were missing, most of which I copied from Windows HELP but theres a WINDOWS NT Uninstall Directory file missing that I never heard of before because I did uninstall IE8 previously. I even downloaded IE8 over itself to get the files back and nothing.
There use to be a tool to wipe all traces of IE from your computer. I think it was called IEraser but I can't find it in Google. Any of you guys ever hear of it? Or something similar? If not, I have to try to correct the version installed. Thanx again for the speedy reply.

Or do you think I can install IE8 over itself again using your method? Sounds feasible.

First, I wouldn't wipe all traces of IE, it's part of Windows and I think you would get some real systems issues if you did that.
Then, yes, try reinstalling IE8 the way I described earlier. The fact that you are not able to uninstall IE8 does concern me, however. I've done it several times, no problems. You may have created these with the system restore, I've seen that cause problems before.
Download cCleaner from Top freeware pics. Run both the cleaner and registry cleaner, the program will ask you if you want to back up the registry. Say yes and give it a name and location so you'll know where to find it, although not once have I needed this. Run it until it shows no errors, usually 3 or 4 times.
Set a restore and download and run Dialafix, you can find it with a search on the MG home page. Check all boxes and give that a run.
Hopefully these steps will repair issues that have been created.:)

To toggle which toolbars you want displayed, just right click in the area underneath the search bar and select what toolbars you want displayed.
To enable/disable add-ons click on Tools (upper right corner of browser) and select Manage Add-Ons.

Kyler, I don't have a toolbar with any options on it. No Tools, View, nothing so I can't go that route. I right click under the search bar and any other area and all I get is minimize, close, etc.
brandypeppy: I tried installing IE8 with no extras and still couldnt remove it. I ran cCleaner both cleaner and registry and saved the backup. Now for Dial-a-fix. First it said it couldn't recognize my version of IE8 but I ran it anyway. It claimed a LOT of dll. files were unregisterable or corrupt and to report them to Dial-a-fix and get an 'exception'. I wrote down all the files and contacted Dial-a-fix and it says it doesn't support IE8 yet. I tried the uninstall again anyway and once again got to the very end, the file needed form the WINDOWS NT Unstall Directory. I do not have nor do I know where to get this Directory. I didn't get any recovery disk to copy from.
I also tried rustyjacks suggestion and followed the path to the CommandBar but when I right clicked on it, I didn't get an option to MODIFY. I got [Default], Compatibility View and FAVBANDROW.

Going over all your replies [and I thank you all], it dawned on me that maybe we're going about this all wrong. Since I never used the 'NO-ADDONS' option, I was unaware of what it actually did. Since my toolbar disappeared, I thought that was part of it. Evidently I'm wrong. Even at Microsoft they say to change that setting, go to Tools, yada yada. I'm missing that toolbar so maybe we need to figure out how to get that back. Right now I have no View, Tools, File, Edit, none of the usual stuff. Of the few icons I do have only one works [HOME]. Printer, Sound and Mail, only HOME works. If I right click on a blank area of the toolbar I get Move, Size Minimize etc. Is there an alternate method to replace the toolbar? And I wouldn'y blame you guys for giving up on this, I'm ready to.

You have no Tools menu, maybe you can go here
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962963
    and click the fixit button.
If you scroll down, it walks you through the manual repair. You can either do it yourself or read what the button does then click the button. Reboot and hope it is repaired.
